parties du Monde. Paris: Bellin, 1764. First edition of one of the best-known French maritime atlases of the 18th century, with contemporary coloring and in generally good condition. Jacques Nicolas Bellin, royal hydrographer and engineer-geographer of the navy and of the Depot of Maps and Plans, compiled several atlases of nautical leaves for military and commercial use, here entirely reproduced on a smaller scale with the addition of new material (NMM). The maps are arranged geographically, starting with North America and the Antilles, followed by South America, then Asia, Africa, Europe and detailed coastal maps of France. Particularly interesting is the first volume devoted to North America, which also includes plans of Quebec, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, New Orleans and other major colonial cities. NMM 211 (list 580 maps); Nordenskiold 10; Phillips Atlases 638; Sabin 4555 6 parts in 5 vols, 4to, (315 x 240mm). 578 complete maps according to indexes, most double-page, some single and some folding, all with contemporary coloring (some leaves slightly browned, coloring sometimes imperfect at edges).
