Description

Romain ROLLAND (1866-1944). P.S. with autograph correction, May 21, 1936; 1page in-4 typewritten. Protest against Hitler's concentration camps. "Thousands of men are locked up in the prisons, gaols and concentration camps of Hitler's Germany. Their crime is to have remained intrepidly faithful to the principles of social justice, freedom and European peace. Death on the scaffold awaits some of them; many others will be cowardly murdered by their jailers, for so-called [autograph addition] escape attempts, or driven to suicide by ill-treatment. We appeal to all free men of Europe to come to the aid of these noble victims [...] In the name of outraged human rights, in the name of threatened peace between peoples, in the name of oppressed and gagged Germany itself, let the voice of the world be heard, calling for a general amnesty for all men condemned in Germany because of their political and social faith! It is impossible to establish general peace in Europe before this necessary gesture of justice and appeasement is made. The peace of Europe is chained by Hitler's hands in his prisons. Let's free it!"
