ROLLAND ROMAIN: (1866-1944)

ROLLAND ROMAIN: (1866-1944) French Dramatist & Novelist, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1915. A very good association content by Rolland, A.L.S., Romain Rolland, three pages, 8vo, n.p., Monday 17th March 1913, in French. Rolland starts reporting about an engraving, saying ` J´ai déposé la gravure, à votre nom, chez mon concierge; mais on n´est pas encore venu la prendre´ (Translation: " I left the engraving, to be given to you, with my concierge; but nobody has come to take it yet") Rolland further responds to his correspondent´s questions and referes to other important authors, saying ` Oui, Upton Sinclair est Américain, il est vtrès engagé dans la lutte sociale, qui est en ce moment très vive aux Etats Unis. Je l´ai vu à Paris, il y a quelques mois: c´est un beau type d´idéaliste homme d´action. Je ne sais pas au juste où il habite maintenant. Son ancienne adresse aux Etats Unis étant: Edge Moor, Delaware´ (Translation: " Yes, Upton Sinclair is American, he is very involved in the social struggle, which is very lively in the United States at the moment. I saw him in Paris a few months ago: he is a good type of idealist, man of action. I don't know exactly where he lives now. Its former address in the United States being: Edge Moor, Delaware") Further Rolland refers to his correspondent´s question related to his own inner life, and states ` Je ne crois pas que vous rencontriez jamais un homme ou une femme qui puisse vous renseigner avec exactitude sur ma vie intérieure; car je ne l´ai guère confiée. Plus tard, - dans quelques années, - si cela peut offrir un peu d´intérêt, je vous communiquerai certains de mes cahiers de notes. Je crois qu´on y voit assez bien, en raccourci, l´évolution morale et intellectuelle d´une génération française´ (Translation: " I don't believe you will ever meet a man or woman who can tell you exactly about my inner life; because I hardly confided it. Later - in a few years - if it might be of some interest, I will send you some of my notebooks. I believe that we see quite clearly, in shorthand, the moral and intellectual evolution of a French generation.") Further again and before concluding, Rolland mentions two iconic literary authors who he is going to meet later on, saying ` Je dois me rencontrer aujourd´hui, chez Stefan Zweig, avec Rainer Maria Rilke. Connaissez-vous celui-ci?´ (Translation: " I have to meet today at Stefan Zweig's home with Rainer Maria Rilke. Do you know this one?"). Some very minor, light traces of former mounting to the right edge of the final page and with one very small hole, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) Austrian novelist, playwright, journalist and biographer, himself a passionate collector of autograph manuscripts. Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) Austrian poet and novelist.
