FRANCHE COMTÉ - BESANÇON Free imperial city CAROLVS - V IMPERATOR. Half-body bust of Charles V (1520-1558) crowned, cuirassed and holding a sword and a cruciger globe. In exergue: 15 - 87. R/. + BESANCON : CITE : IMPERIALE. Arms of the city of Besançon within an indented shield. ♦ Feuardent 12228 Copper token from the city's account services 1587. Rare. Slight chipping of the blank when struck. Beautiful portrait. Very nice. During the 12th and 13th centuries, the people of Besançon fought against the authority of the archbishops, finally obtaining their communal freedoms in 1290. While remaining subject to Emperor Charles V, Besançon governed itself through a council of twenty-eight notables elected by universal male suffrage on several levels, and a council of fourteen governors appointed by the notables. Besançon remained a "free city" for almost 400 years.
