NODIER (Ch.) - TAYLOR (J.) and CAILLEUX (Alph. de). Picturesque and romantic journeys in old France. Franche-Comté. P., Jules Didot, 1825. Fort in-folio, red half-bas. with corners, smooth spine decorated with gilt iron; [1]-222 pp. 20 lithogr. vignettes in-t. (of 21), 146 lithogr. plates h.-t. (of 159), front, title and 2 plates detached. Covers worn, first jaw split at tail for 15 cm, upper hinge weakened, boards scratched, cuts and corners dull, scattered foxing. Fair condition. After the two volumes published on Basse-Normandie (1820-1825), "Franche-Comté" forms the second part of the "Voyages pittoresques et romantiques" series, one of the first and most important French lithographic productions, according to Quérard. It's a journey through the region's ancient ruins and fantastic landscapes: Dôle, Tournus, Brou, Cerdon, Jura, St-Claude, the Antre valley, Lac de Bonlieu, Lac de Châlin, Orgelet, Cressia, Château d'Arlay, Lons-le-Saulnier, Besançon, the Osselles caves, Château de Joux and Saut du Doubs, Montbéliard. A splendid work with 146 plates printed on chine appliqué, lithographed by Engelmann, after the best painters (Bonington, Isabey, Victor Adam, Ciceri, Fragonard, Géricault, Granet, Joly, Villeneuve, Alaux, Harding, Dauzats...). The breathtakingly beautiful views are a fine demonstration of romanticism, with nature echoing a dreamy ideal. One of the finest works of the 19th century, and the most beautiful on the province of Franche-Comté. Unfortunately, complete copies are rare. Ours is missing pages 49-54 and the engraved vignette corresponding to the chapter on Nantua, pages 199-202, as well as plates no. 14, 36, 37, 40, 45, 47, 50, 50 bis, 125, 126, 128, 137 and 142. The beautiful romantic binding, a little faded, is nevertheless solid, and freckling to the plates is limited to the margins. Heraldic bookplate.
