(1585). CICERON. OPERA OMNIA. Lyon, Antoine Gryphe, 1585. 4 volumes bound in 2 large folio volumes, fawn calf, gilt arms on covers and gilt numerals formed of 2 Ds and 2 Bs interlaced and crowned, placed at each corner and on the spine (17th century binding). Monumental 4-volume publication of the complete works of Cicero procured by the humanist Denis Lambin (1520-1572), professor of Greek at the Collège de France. "This edition was Antoine Gryphe's greatest success. Some writers have claimed, without proof, that the expenses he incurred to publish it were the cause of his loss" (Baudrier). Copy with arms "attributed to an Anjou collector by the name of Du Butay. But nothing allows us to adopt this identification" (O.H.R pl. 1175). Restorations to spine and corners, hinges split, minor worm work in fine (Baudrier VIII, 392/393).
