We know how important the works of Cicero were to Étienne Dolet. He revered Cicero, and when the quarrel between the Ciceronians and the anti-Ciceronians broke out, he threw himself into the fray with a vengeance. His quarrel with the reformers was based on a return to the purity of Cicero's language. He translated Cicero's Epistles or familiar letters of the great orator in 1542, as well as the translation of the Questions tusculanes, a philosophical work on death in which the author seeks to establish the immortality of the soul and demonstrate that happiness can only be found in virtue. Our edition escaped Brunet, who cites the same date as that published by Ruelle. Covers missing and hinges worn. Title repaired in upper margin, side margins sometimes a little short with damage to printed marginalia. Provenance: Renouard (handwritten bookplate) and Ernest Stroehlin (bookplate).

The author, born in Sainte-Marie-aux-Anglais (Calvados) in the second half of the 15th century, was a grammarian. The privilege states that he was regent of the Caen Faculty of Law. Jean Le Picard avocat parisien, dated 1625 and qqs. annotations in his hand.

The first two speeches are a justification of the anti-Roman attitude manifested by Longueil in Oratio de laudibus divi Ludovici atque Francorum, Paris, 1520. The Letters by Bembo and Sadolet are addressed to Christophe de Longueil and G. Budé. There is also a letter from G. Budé to Christophe de Longueil and another from Erasmus to the same.
