Set of 2 letters: - L.A.S. to Mme Frinzine. S.l.n.d. "Monday 3". 1 p. in-8. Header printed in green "Never More". Red ink. "Madame, only yesterday I hoped to be able to attend the wedding of Mademoiselle your daughter, but a residue of liver pain which has kept me at home for the past fortnight will not allow me to mingle in the joys of what must be for you a day of happiness. [Please tell Monsieur Frinzine [the publisher] that I will see him on my first outing. Large, handsome signature. - L.A.S. S.l.n.d. "Vendredi". 1 p. in-8. Letterhead engraved in red with the number BA. Black ink. Barbey requests a box at the Théâtre français. "There is no first performance this week, and I have to write an article for tomorrow. What better occasion to talk about the Théâtre français! [...]". Enclosed: - Two beautiful autograph envelopes from Barbey, written in two different red inks; to Amédée Pommier and to M. and Mme Thomas. Stamps retained. - A portrait of Barbey engraved by Paul Rajon.

Long, piquant letter on the Capuchin Jean-Baptiste's stay in Paris; his visit to Mme de Sade, with a letter from Mme de Cavaillon; the father must have ended his stay by being plucked at gambling and by women... November 15 [1780]. On his life with Mme de Sade, who still hopes for her husband's release... Her health suffering from Paris and deteriorating, Mlle de Rousset is thinking of going back to Provence, which displeases Mme de Sade. Tuesday evening [1781?] Gothon gives birth to a beautiful baby boy. October 26, 1781. She had Gothon, in agony, carried out of the château, to a room where she received the sacraments... 2 L.A.S. from Gothon's chambermaid to Gaufridy (La Coste 1779-1780).
