Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. Amsterdam Impressionism developed around the turn of the century as an artistic continuation of the Hague School. The main representative of this style, along with Georg Hendrik Breitner, was Isaac Israels, who worked for a long time in Paris. The two became friends early on at the Academy in The Hague, where Israels began his studies at the age of twelve, and maintained a close artistic exchange over the years. Through his father, the painter Jozef Israels, Isaac was familiar with contemporary painting circles; together with him he traveled to Paris at an early age and became acquainted with the Impressionists there. Although both Impressionist movements were stylistically quite close to each other, the subjects of painting distinguished the Hague School from the Amsterdam Impressionists: away from the atmospheric landscape depictions in the sense of the École de Barbizon, the young Amsterdam artists made the unadorned everyday life of the cities their motif. Issac Israels was able to make the acquaintance of Edouard Manet in Paris during his travels with his father from 1878 and later also became acquainted with German Impressionism with Max Liebermann. From 1909 he lived in Paris for four years and made everyday life there his subject. He shows us life in his scenes from the cafés, vaudevilles and parks, sometimes the sitters are in lively dance, sometimes quietly absorbed in reading the newspaper. The intimate scene of the mother with her daughter on the still park-like Champs Elysées shown here dates from precisely this period; on the reverse, the stretcher still bears the typical stamps of the renowned manufacturer Burgeois Ainé, from whom numerous Impressionist artists obtained their material. The RKD in The Hague dates the painting accordingly to these years and already knows it since a first auction in September 1916. Estimated shipping costs for this lot: Arrangement after the auction.
