Huanghuali chair, Qing dynasty, 19th century, China. The chair is decorated with carvings depicting a deer. Deer - known for its endurance, grace and long life. The deer is a Chinese symbol of longevity. The word for deer in Chinese is “lu,” which translates to “income.” Therefore, the combined values represent a prosperous long life. In Chinese art, the deer is depicted with court officials. This is said to signify a desire for fame, recognition and a long successful career. Height: 106 cm. Rare pair of armchairs with right-angled, partially lined legs. The seats and backrests are held by gilded brass tubes. The rear legs are partially truncated, overhanging discs. Suspended seats and recessed backrests upholstered in cream cotton patterned fabric.
