IMPORTANT SET OF SOUVENIRS FROM GENERAL CLAUDE MARIE LEBLEY (1754-1833) INCLUDING : -Portrait as a brigadier general, circa 1800, he wears the insignia of his office (baudrier and epaulettes of brigadier general). Oil on canvas re-coated (restorations), marked "1801." 81 x 65 cm. He appears to be wearing the strong general's sword sold in our set. The decorations of knight of the order of Saint Louis and officer of the Legion of Honor of the 1st type were added later. -Sword of officer of staff to the regulation of Vendémiaire AN XII. Fusée entirely watermarked with silver. Brass mounting, pommel with empanelled helmet, guard with a branch, two quillons and bivalve shell. Body knot at the helmet on bundle of flags. Blade with median flattened, engraved, gilded and blued in the third with decoration of flowered trophies and cabalistic symbols. Leather scabbard with two brass fittings, and two suspension rings (missing the bolt). A.B.E. (Wear and small oxidation on the blade). -Strong general's sword. Ebony handle, watermarked (cracked). Brass mounting, urn-shaped pommel engraved on the obverse with a shield with a flaming spindle loaded with lightning bolts and on the reverse with a floral motif. Guard with one branch decorated with spheres, straight quillon with scroll. Horizontal keyboard cut out, in shield, with decoration of leafy frieze. Beautiful straight blade with flat back and hollow sides engraved, gilded and blued in the third with scrolls and a cartouche "VRYHEID GELYKHEID EN BROEDERSCHAP" (Liberty, Equality, Fraternity in Flemish). With a later leather scabbard (broken, missing), with two brass fittings (one missing). Bouterole engraved with dotted line "Juste Fourbr rue Honoré près celle des poulies." A.B.E. This strong sword would have been given as a sword of honor by a lodge of Batavian refugees in France "Les vrais bataves", installed in Dunkirk, where Lebley serves as commander of the place. A set of 60 documents relating to the life and career of the general: -Copy of the general's birth certificate. -Captain's certificate for citizen Claude Lebley, then lieutenant of the 6th artillery regiment. On vellum. Made in November 1792. Signature of the minister Bouchotte. -Patent for a medal of vetérance in the name of sergeant major Le Bley. On vellum. October 12, 1793. Signature of Bouchotte. -Brevet de général de brigade for citizen Claude Lebley, then captain (!) of the 6th artillery regiment. On vellum. Done on 5 frimaire Year 2. Relation of the affairs which took place from the 19th of Nivôse to the 27th of the said month, year 5 of the Republic" by the divisional general Alexandre Berthier.
