Description

Castilian School of the second half of the 17th century. "Saint Barbara". Carved and polychrome wood. Glass eyes. Lack of polychromy. The right hand is missing. Measurements : 100 x 52 x 28 cm. Sculpture from the 17th century Spanish school in carved and polychrome wood. The figure represents the image of a young woman with long hair (symbolising her virgin condition) falling on her tunic and her mantle with golden brocades. The clothes give her volume, which is not without a certain amount of movement, and she has glass eyes. She lacks the palm, which she should certainly be holding in her missing hand. Saint Barbara was born in Nicomedia, near the Sea of Marmara, at the beginning of the 3rd century. Her father was a tyrant named Dioscorus who, on learning that she had converted to Christianity, locked her up in a castle. Shortly afterwards he forced her to marry, but she objected, saying that she chose Christ as her husband. Diopsychorus wanted to kill her, but she fled and he pursued and tortured her.
