A very large bronze chess piece seal matrix with facetted trumpet-shaped body, pierced trefoil knop finial, small dimple to the upper face for alignment; outer ring of Lombardic text '* hVnDR DE tOttEnORE' for 'Hundred of Totnore' and two lines of abbreviated text to the centre 'co[m]itat’ svssex [county of Sussex]'; accompanied by a museum-quality impression. Found by a farmer on his land 'eyes only', in Sellindge, Kent, UK, circa 1992. The Hundred of Totnore in the Rape of Pevensey, Sussex appears with the spelling Tottenore in the Rotuli Hundredorum of 1272 and the name means Totta's Bank.
