Born in Gorizia, Austria, to French parents, Luigi Loir began his training at the Parma Art Academy in 1853. After studying in Italy, he moved to Paris, where he specialised in views and scenes of the French capital. After the Paris City Council bought two of his paintings, he was officially appointed painter of the Paris boulevards soon after. Loir was particularly successful in selling his works executed in gouache. They are characterised by an excellent technique, capturing wonderful impressions of the Parisian Belle Époque with spontaneous but securely placed brushstrokes.
