DOUBS. Jules MALDINEY (b. Mandeure, Doubs, 1864), head of physics at the Besançon Faculty of Science, president of the Besançon Photo-club, author of a brochure entitled: Les Véritables inventeurs du cinématographe sont les frères Lumière nés à Besançon. 2 autograph letters signed to Auguste and Louis Lumière. 5 pp. ½ in-8, letterheads of the Physics Laboratory of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Besançon. Besançon, January - June 1926. Accompanied by a business card. On the project for a rue Lumière in Besançon and a commemorative plaque on the birthplace of the Lumière brothers. "In this vow, I asked that Lumière's name be given to one of the streets in the city of Besançon, associating the names of his sons Auguste and Louis with that of his father, as a token of admiration for their scientific and industrial work. The City Council committee responsible for naming new streets has had this request before it for several days now, and I think I can tell you that the matter is well underway. I also hope to be able to have a commemorative plaque affixed to the house in rue du Château where you were born and where the first Antoine Lumière photographer's studio was located; all I need is to be able to raise the necessary funds to carry it out". To this end, he published a brochure and asked the Lumière brothers to provide him with some photographs. "I will also include the rue des Granges studio and the photo of the Grenouillards nautical float that I presented to you on my last trip to Lyon [...]". But business was slow. "If it were possible, I would like to keep the photograph of your father and that of Mr. Louis Lumière, which will still be useful when I can, as I announced, have a commemorative plaque placed on your birthplace, place Victor Hugo (formerly place Saint-Quentin). As I told the Soc. d'émulation and the Congrès des soc. savantes de Fr. Comté, if we were in America, it would have been done long ago. And foreigners visiting Besançon might notice that the Place Victor Hugo contains both the birthplace of Victor Hugo and the birthplace of the inventors of the cinematograph and many scientific discoveries, within a few meters of each other [...]. Rue Lumière is a new street being built in the middle of Saint-Claude, behind the Viotte train station. We didn't want to change the street names in the center of town. I apologize for all these details, but I think they may interest you as family memories. I've just finished today with a lesson on color photography, the Lumière process, my public photography course that I've been giving free of charge at the University of Besançon for 25 years [...]".
