This compact is a typical example of the influence of China and Japan on French jewelry production during the Art Deco period. The term "laque burgauté" or "lac burgauté" refers to mother-of-pearl-encrusted lacquer in shades of pink, violet, blue and green, which can be complemented by gold and silver leaf inlays to achieve enhanced contrasting effects. This technique was particularly used on display objects, sets, watches and clocks by the great houses of Place Vendôme during the 1920s. Lac burgauté" plates were most often manufactured in Japan, then integrated into objects in the West. During the exhibition "Objets Précieux Art Déco de la collection du Prince et de la Princesse Sadruddin Aga Khan", organized in 2018 in Paris by the Ecole des Arts Joailliers, a box from the Maison Cartier and a set from the Maison Janesich were presented, demonstrating the use of lac burgauté plates.
