Impressive work published in 10 installments (cf. table at the end). 1st impression of the 61 beautiful lithographs on tinted background by François Stroobant: illustrated title, 30 large headpieces and 30 plates picturing views, often animated, of sites and monuments of Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Jericho, Ascalon, Tiberias, etc.; furthermore, vignette in- text representing the arms of Jerusalem. This work is a translation of "The Holy Land [...], with historical descriptions by the Rev. G. Croly". The Scottish painter and traveller D. Roberts (1796-1864) is particularly renowned for his watercolours representing daily life in the Middle East and especially in Egypt. Ref.
