Half tan basane, speckled paper boards, spine ribbed with gold titles, marbled paper endpapers (later binding). Eighth complete edition of the works of Ambroise Paré with numerous woodcuts in-text, and a portrait of the author engraved by Gilles Horbeck in 1584, hors-texte at the beginning of the volume, introducing the Preface. (Significant staining; pp.700-701, quire half detached from the spine, spine rubbed and cracked, upper headband damaged, small tear not missing on the title page)

Measurements: 34 x 21.5 x 8 cm. Ambroise Paré (Laval, 1510-Paris, 1590), French surgeon of the 16th century. He is considered the father of surgery, anatomy, teratology and military health. A collection of his works was published in Paris in 1575, and was later reprinted several times. Several editions also appeared in English, German and Dutch. Thanks to his writings in French, during the course of his lifetime he advanced surgery more than the whole of mankind had done in 1,500 years of our era." Incomplete book. Provenance: from the collection of the actor Dietmar Schönherr This work is being auctioned for the benefit of the Pan y Arte Foundation in Münster Ambrose can be recognised by his attributes, the beehive, a quill and a book, as well as his mitre and crosier. In the picture, Ambrose is writing his work "De officiis ministrorum", which he based on Cicero's work "de officiis" in 388/89
