IRAN, QAJAR ART, 19th CENTURY Wooden case decorated with micro-mosaic (khatamkari), mother-of-pearl, bone and pewter fillets, clasp and two hinges partly replaced, some accidents. A SMALL MICRO-MOSAIC (KHATAMKARI) MIRROR CASE, PERSIA, QAJAR, 19TH CENTURY H: 18 x W: 14.5 cm Micro-mosaic decoration (khatamkari or khatambandi) has been present in Iran since the 14th century and is thought to have originated in China or the Near East. The production of khatamkari experienced a new boom during the reign of Nasir al-Din Shah (1848-1896), several of these works were destined for the Shah and his court entourage (Gwenaëlle-Fellinger, L'Empire des Roses, chefs-d'oeuvres de l'art persan du XIXe, Editions Snoeck et Musée du Louvre-Lens, 2018, pp.322-324).
