A new edition (third, fourth or fifth) of this novelistic version of the life of the knight Bayard by Symphorien Champier, the famous French physician and historian, born in 1471 (1472?) in Saint-Symphorien-le-Loise and died around 1540, whom we introduced in the previous issue and who himself had a most romantic destiny: he practiced medicine in Lyon, married one of Bayard's cousins, followed the Duke of Lorraine as his physician on his way to fight in Italy, distinguished himself at Marignan, and, on his return, took charge of the municipal affairs of the city of Lyon... His story of Bayard is, as we said, more romantic than the one written by Jacques de Mailles. Nevertheless, it was a great success. First published in 1524, it went through five editions in 1525, three of which were undated, making the order of publication uncertain. Ours is probably the third or fourth. It contains in fine a part in Latin Compēdiola illustrissimi Bayardi vita: una cum panegyricis epitaphis, anecdotes about Bayard's life accompanied by epitaphs by Nicolas de Quarcet and Symphorien Champier. It is illustrated with 6 woodcuts in the text, depicting towns, battles, castle assaults, soldiers and numerous initials. Formerly restored binding with stains and defects, hinges partly split, epidermis, illegible handwritten inscription on first cover. Provenance: Baron Sosthène de La Roche Lacarelle (bookplate, April 30-May 4 1888, no. 491) and Paul Couturier de Royas (bookplate).
