"I think that the influence of Manet, Monet, Sisley, Renoir, Degas, Seurat and Pissaro weighs too heavily on the art of the present day for one to find any hint of a truly new direction. If you mean by impressionism the whole of the tendencies so different from the painters of 1870, no, impressionism is not finished. I don't know enough about Gaugain's work to tell you about it, as for Wisther and Fantin-Latour, they are painters without a phrase who didn't linger either on the literary or on the technical side of their art, while Cézanne likes to assert very strongly technical preoccupations. - Painters to whom I often think of Rembrandt, Velasquez, Le Lorrain, Manet, Seurat. I ask nature for the means to realize what Life inspires me to do"...
