Description

DELAUNAY Robert (1885-1941).

L.A.S. "R. Delaunay", Monday [1924, to Carl EINSTEIN]; 2 pages in-4 in Indian ink (small tears at the corners repaired). Letter evoking simultaneous art and the aesthetic revolution of the 1910s, as well as the creations of his wife Sonia. [Carl EINSTEIN (1885-1940), German art critic and writer, was a tireless defender of modern art, and the discoverer of African art in Europe. He was a contributor to the magazine Die Aktion]. He received Einstein's letter and replies in eight numbered points... "I have drawings about Paris". He mentions the notes of Guillermo de TORRE (1900-1971, Spanish essayist and poet, whom the Delaunay couple had met during their stay in Madrid in 1917-1921) "on simultaneous. Very interesting". He would like to revise these notes: "It is absolutely necessary to fight this infamous reaction of those who started the revolution of 1910-11-12-13-14 - who return to neo-Greek - to rococo - to neo Barocco etc - or to false Chaldean. All this because they have not found ways to express an organically viable state. There is currently a spirit of decadence, decay and decomposition in the minds of people. Investigations are needed in all countries. A review of things? A review of generations". Delaunay would like to know if he will have "enough space for us to have proof, photographic documents to support these claims", and how many documents he can give. He finishes: "8 A very pretty poem by the admirable DELTEIL with photos of Mme Sonia's things from a fashion scene that was given at the Claridge's in the spring"... [Alluding to the charity event held at the Claridge Hotel on March 24, 1924, at which models of Sonia Delaunay's clothes were presented, while Joseph Delteil read his poem La mode qui vient].
