Suzanne DUCHAMP (1889-1963) Urban landscape, 1913 Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower right 89 x 130 cm Provenance : Jean Roudillon Collection The last of four siblings, she was the younger sister of Jacques Duchamp dit Jacques Villon (1875-1963), Raymond Duchamp (dit Raymond Duchamp-Villon) (1976-1918) and Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968). After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Rouen, she followed in her older brother Marcel Duchamp's footsteps and moved to the Montparnasse district of Paris in 1910 to develop her artistic career as a painter. Her brothers' fame enabled her to exhibit at several Salons, including the Salons des Indépendants, des Tuileries, d'Automne and the Union des Femmes Peintres et Sculpteurs, before she had a solo show at the Galerie Paul Guillaume in 1923. It is likely that this canvas came from the former Paul Guillaume collection, of which Jean Roudillon was the expert at the sale of his Negro art collection in November 1965.
