Lot 511 - JOHN MICHELE GRANERI The dissipation of the prodigal son Oil on canvas, 49.5x84 cm The painting depicts a theme that achieved great success in Piedmont in the 18th century: that of the vicissitudes of the Prodigal Son. The Gospel story, exemplary on a moral level, also lent itself very well to cues for genre painters. The canvas are the work of one of the most important painters in the field, Giovanni Michele Graneri. The artist was among the most significant representatives of genre and bambocciata painting, which flourished in Piedmont during the 18th century. He was formed in the wake of the great bambocciante painter Pietro Domenico Ollivero but, from his early works, he appears clearly distinguishable, with a marked personal style, less refined and less prone to meditation, rich in a realism with a popular feel, with a taste for the anecdotal, the minute episode the picaresque accents. His lively, ironic, icastic painting met the taste of court personalities, private bourgeois and nobles, for whom he painted a large number of pictures, now partly dispersed on the market. In this case Graneri, as Ollivero had already done makes a cast, skilfully and with precise variations, from engravings, part of a series of 5 sheets representing the parable of the prodigal son with subjects of invention by Cornelis De Wael. Lot 512 - FRANCESCO ANTONIANI River landscape with figures and small bridge, oil on canvas, 102x103.5 cm The rather large landscape can be attributed to Francesco Antoniani. The canvas is masterfully painted with skillful play of light and color. The debt that Francesco Antoniani denounces to Scipione and Vittorio Amedeo Cignaroli is evident, both in the very setting of the scene in which a sincere though less complex pastoral spirit is diluted than that expressed in the arcadian compositions of the two Cignaroli, and in the individual pictorial details. The groups of wayfarers and animals are inspired by Flemish prints, especially by Nicolaes Berchem. The canvas can be dated to around 1760.

Lot 518 - JUSEPPE MARULLO Christ and the Samaritan woman at the well Oil on canvas, 113.5x141 cm The painting is a characteristic, high-quality work by Marullo, datable to around 1640. Of Marullo we have little data for his early training, but his painting shows a careful knowledge and study of the various trends that ran through Naples during the 17th century. He has been associated with Stanzione but was also influenced by the poetics of Bolognese classicism; a vein of naturalism certainly received from Ribera persists in his work. Contact with Francesco Guarino's work in Apulia also introduced him to the rich narrative details prevalent in the local setting. The painting lends itself to precise comparisons with signed works by Marullo such as a "Lot with Daughters" from a private collection (fig. 1) where the figure of the woman on the right appears axes close to that of the Samaritan woman in our painting. Lot 520 - JULIUS PIPPI KNOWN AS JULIO ROMANO (circle of) Holy family with St. John Oil on canvas applied to panel, 103x78 cm The valuable painting is a quality replica of the so-called "Holy Family Spinola," in which Giulio Romano depicts the first meeting between Jesus and the Baptist in the presence of Joseph, Mary and Elizabeth. Some features of the late Raphaelesque style, later taken up by Romano, emerge in the work, as can be seen in the idealized female faces and closely intertwined figures. This is complemented by Romano's personal characteristics, such as the metallic palette and the muscular figures with marked features.
