Lot 63.1 - [Revolutionary Autograph] Autograph letter signed by a son to his father, dated July 16, 1789, recounting the famous events of the Revolution in Paris. A truly moving account of the storming of the Bastille and the events of July 13-15, 1789. "Imagine an immense city given over to the brigandage of a multitude of beggars, who set everything ablaze with iron and flame (...) in the evening, the city council decided to form a bourgeois militia. The citizens, divided into 60 districts, formed 48,000 men capable of bearing arms, but they were needed and we didn't have any. On Tuesday morning [July 14th], armed with pickaxes and sticks, we presented ourselves at the gates of the Invalides (...) we entered the arsenal where we found more than 50,000 rifles (...) the first use we made of them was to go and lay siege to the Bastille". This is followed by an account of the riots, and how the governor of the Bastille, Launay, the deputy governor and the provost marketeer, Flesselles, had their heads chopped off in the Place de Grève: "We put these 3 bloody heads on top of the pikes, and the keys of the Bastille with them, and we carried these trophies around the city". "Wednesday morning we were busy raising cavalry. At noon, we had happy news that was continued by the arrival of 200 deputies from the 3 orders, commissioned by the King to ask for peace. It was the most beautiful sight in the world to see them enter the Hotel de Ville, on foot, to the cheers and shouts of joy from all over Paris". 4 in-8 pages written in brown ink, traces of folding, small wormholes and an inconsequential tear.
