The routes of the most important naval voyages of the time are also indicated. Among these: the voyage of Dutch navigator Willem Cornelisz Schouten, who rounded Cape Horn in 1616, listed as discoverer of 'Terra de Papous ... Terra de Papous ... discovered by Gulielmo Scouten Dutch ... l'an 1616' [Land of Papua ... discovered by Gulielmo Scouten Dutch ... the year 1616] ; the arrival in France of the Siam Embassy in 1686, on two French ships 'Road made from Siam to Brest the year 1686' [Road made from Siam to Brest the year 1686]; The voyage of the Jesuits, led by Papal Legate Maillard de Tournon, to Pondicherry and China in 1702 'Canaries to Pondisery and China the year 1702' [Canaries to Pondisery and China the year 1702], since the mission made a long stop in the Canary Islands. Two-column text. With engraved Frontispiece, engraved author's portrait, large folding engraved map of China, 34 double-page engraved plates and views, and 110 half-page engraved illustrations in text. Good copy. Rare edition, beautifully illustrated work. This is "the definitive account" (Howgego) of the embassy that the VOC (Dutch East India Company) sent to the Emperor of China, the entire trip occupying the years 1655 to 1657. Precious for its vast iconographic part: frontispiece, portrait, folded geographical map, 34 plates and 110 engraved subjects: scenes, torture, costumes, botany, zoology, ships, temples, landscapes, city views, Batavia, Macao, Nanjing, Beijing, Canton, Imperial Palace, Porcelain Tower, etc. The second part gives a general description of the Chinese empire, including botany and zoology. The first part covers the East Indies and Southeast Asia before going on to China itself. Japan, Korea and Formosa appear as well. Nieuhof served as steward, artist and chronicler on Pieter de Goyer and Jacob de Keyzer's VOC embassy to the Chinese Emperor. The party got a more intimate view of China than almost any other Dutch visitor of the 17th century, and the breadth of Nieuhof's interests and the large number of drawings he made provided a wealth of new material that makes the present work an essential primary source. Cox: "The Dutch, being at the height of their power, having supplanted the Portuguese, desired to gain access to China and a portion of the Chinese trade. After much opposition the Government succeeded in sending merchants to try the pulse of the Chinese at Canton. Upon their report it was determined to despatch ambassadors from Batavia to the Court of Peking to solicit liberty to trade. This is the embassy written up by Nieuhoff, who was steward to the ambassadors." Lowendahl: "One plate (of "Paolinx" at p. 193 in the list of plates at end) was never issue in this edition. However, the picture of the "Paolinx Pagode" is engraved in reduced size on p. 108 in part one. "Cat. Nederl. Hist. Scheepvart Mus. 499; Graesse IV, 675; Cordier, BS 2344-45; Lust 541. Little abrasions on binding, internally some brownings and slight stains, traces of wear. Good and fresh copy. First French edition. Three reports written by Jesuits on mission in China, Ethiopia and Tibet and sent to Father Mutio Vitelleschi, General of the Jesuit Company are collected. During his mandate, the presence of the Jesuits in China became significant. I work: Chadenat: "Curieux et rare recuei." The author of the letters from China, which expose what happened in 1624, is probably Wencelas Pantaléon Kirwitzer who signs the last of the letters. But the work has sometimes been attributed to Father Darde or Father Jean-Baptiste Machault. The first two chapters give an overview of the political situation in China and the progress of the Christian religion in that country at the time. The other letters testify to the situation of the various missions established in the country. Kirwitzer, an astronomer and mathematician, joined the Jesuits in 1606. He went on a mission to Asia with other Jesuits in 1618, stayed in Goa and China, where he died in 1626.Cordier, BS 815; Streit, 2136 and 2127; Chadenat 4896; de Backer-S. II, 1824. Löwendahl 81. II work: Paëz, who was martyred in Ethiopia in 1635, gives a detailed account of the country, the state of the church in the country and the activities of the various Jesuit missions. The work was apparently translated by the Jesuit Jean Darde.Sommervogel, V, 258 ; Carayon 906. Unknown to Chadenat, Brunet et Barbier. III work: Letters of Antoine de Andrade during his second trip to Tibet, translated into French by Father Jean Darde. Antonio de Andrade was a Portuguese Jesuit missionary who was sent to Goa and then Agra. After hearing about Christian communities outside the Himalayas, he decided to go there. In 1624 it was he, with his Jesuit brother Manuel Marques, the first Western European, who went to Tibet. After Andrade obtained permission to open a mission in Tsaparang, the capital of Guge, one of many kingdoms in Tibet, he returned to Goa. He wrote a long and enthusiastic letter translated into many languages and returned to Tsaparang to start the mission. But in 1630 the kingdom was invaded by the troops of the king of Ladakh and the missionaries were expelled. This book contains the story of this second journey and the beginning of the mission.Streit V, 310; Cordier BS 2901.

First edition of Kircher's exceptional work on acoustics and music. The is the first European book devoted entirely to acoustics, which treats at length of the echo, laws of acoustics, and of instruments. It presents a remarkable compilation of knowledge, gathered from many contemporary experiments in acoustics and the advances in the construction of musical instruments. The title of the work is the neologism Phonurgia, which means "new way of producing sound." The work was, in part, Kircher's response to Sir Samuel Morland (1625-1695), a fellow of the Royal Society of London, who claimed to have invented the megaphone. Numerous testimonies from Kircher's admirers are appended to the work defending Kircher's claim as the inventor of the tuba stentorophonica, as Morland called it. As he did in the Musurgia, Kircher here describes and illustrates many bizarre and curious inventions like talking statues, an Aeolian tuba and lyre, eavesdropping devices, and hordes of odd-shaped trumpets.

One of the most richly illustrated accounts of a journey to Russia, Persia and adjacent countries and territories by the Dutch artist and traveler Cornelis de Bruyn (1652-1726/27). De Bruyn sailed for Archangel in 1701, continuing on to Moscow, where he remained for over a year. In 1703 he left Moscow, traveling through Asia Minor (Turkey) to Persia, where he remained until 1705. After nearly a year in Isfahan, he made his way to Persepolis, the ancient Achaemenid palace complex, the ruins of which had his particular interest. He spent three months there, carefully drawing the ruins of the palace, the remaining reliefs and the cuneiform inscriptions. His drawings of these ruins are the first reliable images of this palace made accessible to Western scholars. Leaving Persia in 1705 he went to India, Ceylon and the East Indies. He returned by much the same route, residing in Persia in 1706 and 1707, visiting, among other things, the ruins of Pasaragdes. The illustrations include two large folded views, Moscow and Isfahan (194x40.5 cm.), portraits of Samoyeds, as well as many illustrations of local flora and fauna.

The Grotte de Thétys, designed by Charles Perrault, was an integral part of the iconography of the palace and gardens of Versailles. The twenty plates are: a plan, an external view and some plates detailing the statuary and shell and coral decoration of the interior. Millard: "It was designed to represent the climax of the astrological myth of the entire garden, the completion of Apollo's solar course and his return to rest in this underwater cave. The grotto was a marvel of technical innovation. Félibien considered it to be a completely successful imitation of nature by art. The creation lasted only twenty years. It was destroyed in 1684 to be replaced by Mansart's north wing of the palace. However, its unique beauty is preserved with this recording by Félibien."- The statues depicted by J. Traces of wear and lackings on the bindings, sporadic foxing, nice copy with wide margins. Missing 2 plates. Rare first edition, typographical masterpiece magnificently illustrated. The work is illustrated by a refined frontispiece by Oudry, engraved by Cochin and by 273 wonderful illustrations in full-page plates drawn by Oudry and also engraved by Cochin and by the best artists of the time. The tailpieces and other woodcut ornaments in the text, which contribute so much to the elegance of the work, are designed by Bachellier and engraved by Le Sueur and Papillion. The history of the illustrations of the Fables in this edition is told in the "Avertissement de l'editeur." Oudry had drawn freely for his own amusement, various landscape and animal subjects. Cochin took on the responsibility of turning these freehand drawings into finished prints. Although Oudry's skill in portraying animals and his interpretation of La Fontaine's humor can hardly be surpassed, Cochin's sure and expert hand did much to improve the original drawings, particularly the figures. He redesigned them, correcting the figures and background and providing precise lines for the engravers.

Lot 299 - FALCONETTO. Architectural study for a Composite Order Column. - FALCONETTO, John Mary. Architectural study for a Composite Order Column. 410x197 mm. Pencil and pen with black ink. Various writings and numbers in pencil and pen. Sign of use, good conditions. This is a project intended for the construction of an important architecture. The drawing must serve as an operational guide for the artists who have to perform the work, as can be clearly seen from the handwritten notes. In the center a long writing in pen with precise technical indications for the construction of the column "ricordo per lo scalpellino di pigliare un fero per regere il frieze et cornice sopra l'architrave et ancho acio non si spelli detto architrave per il vano grande" (I remember for the stonemason to take a iron to regulate the frieze and frame above the architrave and still do not peel said architrave for the large room). Below, in pencil "Prospectus of the pedestal" (View of the pedestal). The drawing, whose handwritten notes suggest a Venetian author, is attributable to Falconetto. We note that the shadings are very similar to those present in a drawing by the Falconetto, kept in the Prints and Drawings Department of the Dresden Museum. The Veronese architect and decorator participated in the construction of the Palazzo d'Arco in Mantua, whose facade is marked by a giant composite order of pilasters, resting on a high base, very similar to the one outlined in this sheet. In Padua, then, Falconetto used the elegant columns of the Composite Order in the magnificent Porta Savonarola, erected in 1530, which looks like a triumphal arch and is also mentioned by Vasari. In addition, in the Basilica of Sant'Antonio he also participated in the construction of the Chapel of the Ark of the Saint: the facade, all of fine marble, is supported by four beautiful Composite Order columns in white Carrara marble. Falconetto is certainly credited for the decoration of the ceiling of the Chapel, but it appears very likely that he also had a supervisor role, given his recognized importance in the artistic panorama of the time.See Bonaventura Perissutti (O.F.M. Conv.), Devoted and erudite news about the Life and the famous Basilica of St. Anthony of Padua, Niccolò Bettinelli, 1796, p. 32: "The architect of this chapel [...] is wanted to be Giovanni Maria Falconetto Veronese ..."; Sarah Blake Wilk, The sixteenth-century decoration of the Chapel of the Ark of St. Anthony, in The sculptures of the Saint of Padua, curated by Giovanni Lorenzoni, Vicenza, Neri Pozza 1984.
