Involved in the Resistance, he was responsible for this issue. All stamps bearing the effigy of Marshal Pétain are normally overprinted on the obverse - i.e. upside down when used on the mail - and it was as a symbolic gesture to show the deposed Marshal that A.. Suarnet took this initiative. The fact that on this stamp from André Suarnet's collection, the overprint is right-side-up is a curious anomaly and a rarity... in short, a reversed overprint... right-side-up...

Lot 50 - AEROPHILATELIE - "AMERICA" 1927 by Commandant BYRD - DIRECT FLIGHT UNITED STATES / FRANCE. VERY RARE ACCIDENT MAIL with Pilot's autograph - 300 folds carried, many destroyed in the accident. The "AMERICA" took off from Roosevelt Field / N.Y. at 5:25 a.m. bound for Paris. The plane is a three-engine Fokker. For most of the journey, it had to contend with fog, and later the compass was out of action. The morning of July 1st - at 2:30 a.m. local time - marked the dramatic end of a raid that had begun so well: the America fell into the water, in the rain, 200 meters from the coast at VER sur MER / Normandy. The 4 aviators were able to save themselves thanks to the rubber dinghy they had brought with them and the help of local people. "Le Télégramme" headlines: "The ocean is conquered for the 3rd time, after Lindberg and Chambertin, BYRD has crossed the Atlantic. Lot 51 - AEROPHILATELIE - PREMIER VOL / PLI ACCIDENTE - February 19, 1929 plane "LE DRAGON D'ANNAM" crewed by COSTES, CODOS and BELLONTE. The plane was to make the fast PARIS-INDOCHINA flight via Tunis, Tripoli, Cairo, Karachi, Allahabad and Hanoi. It took off from Le Bourget at 5.55pm, but engine trouble forced it to land in the outbuildings of the Bondy train station. The aircraft was completely destroyed and the crew wounded. The plane leaves Barcelona at 2.03pm for Perpignan. Shortly after departure, the radio signaled that they were climbing above the clouds for better visibility, and asked for weather information on the Perpignan to Toulouse route. No further contact is made. At 2:30 p.m., at an altitude of 1,700 metres, in the village of Villadrau, near Villa Grande, the plane collides with a village house. The crew and passengers were killed, and the plane caught fire from leaking fuel. Lot 60 - AEROPHILATELIE - COURRIER ACCIDENTE DECEMBER 15 1928 - COMPAGNIE LATECOERE - Ligne CASABLANCA à TOULOUSE - (CASABLANCA to TOULOUSE route) Piloted by ROZES, the Toulouse-bound plane had to make a forced landing at Mlgrat (near Barcelona) due to a lack of visibility caused by thick fog. Residents came to the rescue, but the punctured fuel tanks leaked petrol, and a smoker may have been the cause of the plane's fire. 30 kilos of mail out of the 130 kilos carried were destroyed. The recovered mail, badly damaged by the fire, was stamped in Toulouse by the postal services: -LETTER from "TANGER CHERIFFIEN December 14, 1928", franked at 1F50 Moroccan stamp. Significant burn marks at the top of the letter. Bears the claw "AVION CORRESPONDENCE delayed and damaged as a result of the air accident on December 15, 1928". History: during the 2nd week of independence of "CONGO-LEO", in view of the looting & violence perpetrated against Europeans, there was a massive flight of Belgian citizens and the postal services in Leopoldville were completely disorganized.
