Lot 221 - Patek Philippe, Chronometro Gondolo, n° 254584, Mvt. 151425, circa 1880/1900. A historic gold pocket watch, white enamel dial, black enamel Roman numerals and external minute track, gold hands, permanent seconds at 6 o'clock. The case engraved "Chronometro Gondolo Fabricado expressamente para Gondolo & Labouriau, Rolojoeiros, Rio de Janeiro". Hand-wound mechanical movement developed by Patek Philippe for this market. Our watch, working and with no dial flaws, is a true testament to Patek Philippe's history. Please note some slight dents on the case middle and back of the watch. Gondolo & Labouriau, Patek Philippe's agents in Rio de Janeiro in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, sold some 180 watches under subscription to as many members of their "watch enthusiasts" society in 79 weeks, each paying just $10 per week and a draw for the watch received each weekend. In the end, everyone paid $790 and owned their own Patek Philippe, which developed a special mechanism for the occasion. One of the first watches created by Patek Philippe for the South American continent. The Gondolo collection takes its name from the famous Rio de Janeiro retailer Gondolo & Labouriau, who had a very close and fruitful relationship with Patek Philippe between 1872 and 1927. This privileged relationship led to the creation of timepieces designed exclusively for this Brazilian retailer and christened "Chronometro Gondolo". The collection initially consisted of pocket watches, supplemented in the 1920s by the first wristwatches. At a time when Europe was going through difficult times, marked by the First World War, Gondolo & Labouriau alone sold almost a third of all Patek Philippe watches produced. Sales were so spectacular that in Brazil, the word "Patek" became synonymous with "watch". Instead of buying a watch, people would say "buy a Patek" - even if it wasn't a Patek Philippe timepiece at all (source: https://www.patek.com/fr/entreprise/au-c%C5%93ur-du-temps/le-fabuleux-heritage-de-la-gondolo). Cuvette engraved "Chronometro Gondolo Fabricado expressamente para Gondolo & Labouriau, Rolojoeiros, Rio de Janeiro". Manual winding movement developed by Patek Philippe for this market. Our watch, working and without dial defects, is a true testimony to the history of Patek Philippe. Note some slight dents on the case and the back of the watch. Gondolo & Labouriau, the agents of Patek Philippe in Rio de Janeiro at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, sold under subscription some 180 watches to as many members of their company "watch enthusiasts" in 79 weeks, each paying only 10 dollars per week and a draw to award the watch received each weekend. Each, ultimately, will have paid 790 dollars and will own their Patek Philippe, which developed a particular mechanism for the occasion. One of the first watches created by Patek Philippe for the South American continent. The Gondolo collection was named after the famous retailer in Rio de Janeiro, Gondolo & Labouriau, with whom Patek Philippe enjoyed a strong and successful business relationship between 1872 and 1927.This bond resulted in the creation of timepieces - designed exclusively for the Brazilian retailer - named the "Chronometro Gondolo". The collection initially consisted only of pocket watches, before the first wristwatches appeared in the 1920s. At a time when Europe struggled with lean years and faced a World War, it was Gondolo & Labouriau alone who retailed close to a third of the entire production of Patek Philippe watches. Sales were so spectacular that in Brazil, 'Patek' even became a substitute for the noun 'watch'; instead of buying a watch, you bought a Patek - even if it wasn't a Patek Philippe at all. Louis Blériot, French aviation's No. 1 pilot. Born in Cambrai in 1872, Louis Blériot's passion for aerial locomotion dates back to the early 20th century. Already, in 1907, he achieved a real feat for the time, flying at an altitude of 25 meters at a speed of 80 km/h, exclusively in a straight line, with, as was often the case thereafter, a crash landing at the end of the exercise. This feat marked the first of our aviation pioneer's 32 crashes. In addition to the 25,000 gold francs reward, Blériot received national recognition and the promise of a career as a manufacturer that would open up the air all over the world, with immediate fame and orders for the Blériot XI pouring in.
