Paris, Daret, 1646. Two parts in one volume. 21 by 32.3 cm. (18)-105 leaves (36 and 210 pages). Antique full vellum, title-pieces rebacked. Good condition of binding. Marginal staining on ten or so leaves, some rare foxing. Part 1: An engraved title, an engraved title of part 1, an engraving in homage to the Roy, an engraving in homage to Cardinal Mazarin, a portrait of Gomberville, 60 moral emblems, and an end engraving. Part 2: An engraved title for part 2, 43 moral emblems, and a final engraving. Complete (in 103 tables). Bands and initials. First edition of this work composed at the request of MAZARIN for the instruction of the young LOUIS XIV. GOMBERVILLE (1600-1674), writer, was one of the first members of the Académie Française. Part of his literary work focused on morality, and he became a Jansenist, ending his life in seclusion. Beautiful book of emblems. This is a reprint of Otto Vaenius' Emblemata horatiana (1607), with figures retouched by Pierre Daret, the book's engraver and editor. Above all, it's a morality book for children, with a complete teaching device that was new for the time: an illustration (a composite scene) of a moral precept, with an explanation of the engraving and the moral story it tells on the facing page. Below, in Latin, quotations from ancient authors on the same theme. And below the engraving, a short poem also centered on the moral precept evoked: four ways of approaching the moral precept.

Lot 173 - [Macon] [manuscript] LAPLATTE (Abbé François) : Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire sacrée et profane de Macon - Turpe est Atheniensem preregrinum esse - 1766. One volume. 19 by 25.5 cm. (12)-564 pages, followed by a hundred blank leaves. Contemporary boards bound in marbled paper. Handwritten text on bluish paper, very legible, with a few erasures, and additional notes in the margins. In perfect condition. Attached is a handwritten letter addressed to Abbé LAPLATTE, containing a clarification of a scholarly note on the land of Leyne in 1363. Letter addressed to Monsieur La Platte, former curé de l'hesne, near Saint-Pierre church in Mâcon. A manuscript of the same work is in the Bibliothèque municipale de MACON, and was transcribed in the Hors-série N°2 of Etudes Mâconnaises in September 2017. But the manuscript we present is not an identical copy of the transcribed one. We can assume that it is a first version of the text, later taken up and expanded. As a clue, the manuscript held by the town of MACON is dated 1768, ours 1766. Our manuscript stops at around 1702, with a line at the bottom of the page closing it off, for the elements recounted there, whereas the transcribed manuscript goes right up to the beginning of the Revolution. In the preface, our copy cites Gregory of Tours and the Livre enchainé from the archives of Saint-Vincent. These two sources are ignored by the Macon manuscript, which adds Guillaume Paradin. Our copy is often less detailed than the transcribed text, and this seems to confirm the hypothesis of a first version of the text. Here's an example: "One of the parish priests of the diocese who best fulfilled the pious views of Mr. Leveque was Mr. de Boisfranc parish priest of Bussières: see brochure." says our copy (page 456) "One of the parish priests who best fulfilled the holy views of the bishop was Monsieur de Boisfranc, parish priest of Bussières, who, having been a Calvinist himself, knew better the errors of the party. He blessed God for enlightening his eyes, generously abjured his errors and, like another Paul, sought to defend the truths he had so shamefully opposed. He entered the clergy. His talents were known, and Bussières having been entrusted to him, he brought a large number of Calvinists back into the fold of the church" is the version in the 1768 manuscript (page 196 of his transcription). The text then continues with a paragraph, identical in both manuscripts. Attached is Hors-Série N°2 of Etudes Mâconnaises, in which Abbé LAPLATTE's 1768 copy has been transcribed. A unique and exceptional document.

Lot 196 - SAINT-AMANT (Marc-Antoine Gérard, dit De): La Rome ridicule du sieur de Saint Amant - Roma contrafatta del Signore di Saint Amant. S.n, s.l., s.d. One volume. 7 by 12 cm. 103 pages. Contemporary full calf, 5-rib spine, ornate bindings. Minor wear to corners, otherwise very good condition. "Marc-Antoine Gérard, sieur de Saint-Amant (Rouen 1594 - Paris 1660 or 61) is less famous for his poetry than for his debauchery, gluttony and drunkenness. He stayed in Rome in 1633, following in the footsteps of Marshal de Créquy, who had gone to negotiate the secret marriage of Gaston d'Orléans (brother of Louis XIII) and Marguerite de Lorraine with Pope Urban VIII. Saint-Amant had little taste for the Eternal City: a keen observer, he took pleasure in criticizing the city's monuments and fountains in his poem, deploring the cruelty and exuberance of Italian mores, as well as the general greed for gain. In turn, overly prudish matrons and jealous husbands are mocked, while the life of the common people in Rome's bustling streets is colorfully described, as the poet grumbles about the poor quality of food, drink and lodgings. Burlesque, vitriolic and at times crude". The work is considered one of the masterpieces of Baroque literature. Its 1st edition was published in French in 1643. A rare late 17th-century bilingual French and Italian edition of these irreverent CI poems, of which no trace has been found. The Italian translation in rhyming verse seems a form of provocation, given what is said about Rome. One line is retouched (poem VII)...

During the Commune, he organized the defense during the bloody week. Exiled to Switzerland, his socialism became more reformist, and his thinking more anarchist. Back in France, he became a Freemason, and became a theoretician of non-Marxist socialism. To the affirmation of class struggle, he added the cult of law and justice, and the appeal to a feeling of universal human brotherhood, which would inspire JAURES. B.N., Cat. collectif des périodiques IV-p. 344. A rare set from these first 10 years, with an immense wealth of content, the magazine's aim being to be open to all human culture (philosophy, politics, economics, international news, literature, etc.) and to all components of socialism.

Labrude, Joseph Sigisbert Mandel (1749 - 1820) [...], one of Nancy's greatest pharmacists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. "Mettemberg water, or "anti-psoric quintessence", is a secret medicine, hence the name "secret remedy", used to treat scabies. It was proposed in 1794 (year III) by the former military surgeon Joseph Mettemberg. This external remedy was widely used, and its author enjoyed a great deal of support [particularly in government ministries]. In 1801 or 1802, Mandel was "approached by a fellow doctor" who was "experiencing serious accidents as a result of the external use of this specific drug" [...]. [...] At the public meeting of the Société de Santé held on 2 Messidor An X (June 21 1802), in the presence of the Prefect of the Meurthe department, he presented the results of his analyses of the drug, concluding: "It was with the greatest surprise that I discovered that the base of this specific was one of the most deleterious, one of the most active poisons known, muriate of mercury suroxygenated, today called corrosive sublimated mercury". Mandel was not mistaken about the toxicity of this compound, now called mercuric chloride, which did not prevent the water from continuing its long career". (P. Labrude). This collection illustrates the controversy between the inventor and his detractors.

Lot 242 - [Medicine] Collection of all the triduanes, printed in 1748 and 1749, presented by the seven competitors for the Gerard Fitz-Gerald chair, which became vacant following his death on January 10, 1748. This chair was one of four generalist chairs created in 1498: they were called Regencies. These triduanes were printed and entitled: "Quaestiones medicae duodecim [...]. Pro regia cathedra vacante." Monspelii, Joannem Martel, 1748-1749 ; Augustinum Franciscum Rochard, 1749. One volume. 17.5 by 22.5 cm. Multiple pagination. Contemporary full calf, 5-rib spine, ornate caissons, red title page. Epidermure on the boards, a lack at the tail. Brown stain in the outer margin of the first 4 leaves, without affecting the text. Scattered brown spots. Fundamental collection for the attribution of chairs of medicine in Montpellier. This is an exceptional collection, as complete copies of all the triduanes from the same competition are extremely rare. "The most decisive test in the dispute for a chair is that of the triduanes. This name is given to twelve theses that must be defended over three consecutive days, two in the morning and two in the evening. These theses, whose subjects have been assigned by the professors judging the dispute, have only twelve days in which to be composed and printed; as soon as they come off the press, they are distributed, and after an interval of four days, they are defended. The publicity given to them by printing undoubtedly requires that they be worked on with great care; but even if they were a little neglected, the brevity of the time could serve as an excuse." (Desgenettes, Éloges des académiciens de Montpellier, p. 290). The competition was won by Charles Serane, who held the chair until his death (September 13, 1756). (cf. Dulieu, La médecine à Montpellier). The title page of Serane's triduanes is reproduced by Dulieu t. III, 1st part, p. 40, Gourraigne's p. 88. Details of the collection: 1) GOURRAIGNE (Hugues). Monspelii, Joannem Martel, 1748, (4)-26 pp.. Conlon 48: 516. 2) SERANE (Charles). Monspelii, Joannem Martel, 1749, (2)-32 pp. Conlon 49: 848. 3) FITZ-MAURICE (Thomas).
