Lot 252 - Boundary clock in gilded bronze, matte and bright, adorned with an Amur on a cloud holding the portrait of Henri IV next to an empanelled helmet resting on a beam and a pelted shield, leaning on the case crowned with the trophy of his arms and a wreath of roses. Rectangular base in molded white marble, with rounded projections at the front and sides, adorned with friezes of openwork poly-lobed hearts and foliate bases, and two ormolu quarte-feuilles, resting on four wide Breton pulley feet. Bezel edged with an interlacing frieze. Mechanical movement with key winding. Baseplate signed "Gille" "A Paris", not guaranteed. Wire suspension. Louis XVI period. White enameled dial, possibly applied, signed "Gille L'Ainé A Paris", hour markers with black-painted Roman numerals for the hours, chemin de fer and Arabic numerals for the minutes, and red-painted Arabic numerals for the number of the day. With key and balance wheel. H.: 43.5 cm - W.: 37.5 cm - D.: 17.5 cm. Probably partially gilded. Wear and some oxidation to the gilding; some chips and minor chipping to the marble; sword tip missing; some of the applied motifs on the base need to be re-fastened; one nut under the base. Several clocks based on this model, notably by other watchmakers (Duluc, Dutertre, Farine, Cronier...), have been sold at public auction or are kept in museums, such as the Musée Carnavalet, Collection Bouvier in Paris, or the Detroit Museum of Arts [Inv. 28.79], in a format equivalent to the one shown.
