Lot 41 - Le Journal des Voyages. From n°1, July 1877 to n° 1012, November 29, 1896 Le Journal des Voyages. From n°1 July 1877 to n° 1012 November 29, 1896, this first part constituting the first series. Then n°1 December 6, 1896 to n°923 August 9, 1914, constituting the second series (supplemented by several issues, see below). Journal des Voyages / Librairie Illustrée, Paris. Publisher's boards, two distinct series. The first (1877 to 1895, 1st semester): large in-4 (23.5 x 32.4 cm), red percaline, series of cold frames on the boards, smooth spines with title and tombstone on black background, decorated gilded boxes (sun, globe, oil lamp, mystery) / The second (1895 - 1914, up to n°923 of August 9, 1914): large in-4 (23.2 x 32.5 cm), red percaline, beveled boards, tr. gilt. Rich gold and black decoration on front cover and spine (A. Souze). Front cover: large frame of sea anchors, median headband with title, flippers, lion's head, bear on ice floe, gorilla... On spine: buoy, flippers, anchors, arms... Second plate in black: framing fillets, shield and exotic arms in center. Complete hardback collection of the most extraordinary exotic adventure, travel and SF periodical of the late 19th - early 20th centuries. Initially launched by Georges Decaux, a friend of Albert Robida, the magazine wanted to compete with the Tour du monde published by Hachette, but Decaux quickly realized that it could not compete in the realm of real exploration stories, and had to move into the realm of fiction. It was a time of great discoveries and colonial conquests, and French readers were very fond of spicy exotic tales, which the various editors (Armand Montgrédien, Paul Genay, Léon Dewez, Paul Charpentier) delighted in: "Racist, sadistic, chauvinistic, gullible to the point of imbecility, flattering the worst instincts of the Beast, making images [...] the very medium of man's subconscious enslaved by his inner shit, in short, everything to please, but marvelous in its imagination and rich in almost everything that popular adventure literature had to offer at the time, the Journal des Voyages et des Aventures de terre et de mer is perhaps the only periodical in the world to have crushed three quarters of a century with its somewhat sulphurous magnificence" (Pierre Versins, in Encyclopédie de l'utopie des voyages extraordinaires et de la science-fiction). Versins' comment is terrible, but not unfounded, even if we need to put it in context. In these times of colonial conquest, readers are thirsty for exotic details: the unknown, the dream, lies beyond the seas, and some of their children are going there, spurred on by national propaganda glorifying the conquest and the contribution of French civilization. So it's true, everything is there to attract the reader, the best and the worst, and it has to be said, often the worst: inhospitality, strange habits, barbaric customs, erotic undertones, torture, ferocious animals... The covers sacrifice themselves to voyeurism (the arrival of color doesn't help matters!), the texts conceal nothing and even add a lot. But - failing to publish true travel stories - the magazine attracted and pre-published the greatest French adventure writers: Paul d'Ivoi, Louis Boussenard, Capitaine Danrit, Henry Leturque, Pierre Maël, Louis Jacolliot, Camille Debans, Georges Le Faure... Utopian, colonial, military, geographical, detective and fantasy adventure novels, set in all parts of the world, known and unknown, illustrated by all the popular illustrators of the day: Bombled, Conrad, Métivet, Thiriet, Beuzon, Lecomte, Tinayre... The first series is presented in a rather modest publisher's slipcase, while the second is covered in one of the finest series slipcases of the late 19th century. The last volume of the first series includes the first half of 1895, which is included in the first volume of the second series (1895). A few issues (925, 926, 927 and 928) are included, as the series was interrupted when Paul Charpentier, the last editor-in-chief, was called up for military service. Publication continued until July 1915, with uncertain regularity, when most articles were devoted to the war in progress. A complete set in cardboard, quite exceptional. There are, of course, a few flaws: the spines of the first series (fairly inexpensive manufacture) are faded, and some corners and headpieces are damaged. Thirty-eight hardback volumes for dreaming, shivering and trembling; voyages and adventures, real and imaginary, from which Tintin, J

Lot 44 - Le Tour du monde. Nouveau journal des voyages published under the direction of M. Édouard Charton and illustrated by our most famous artists. Librairie Hachette. Paris / London. 1860 - 1st semester 1879. 37 volumes in-4. Le Tour du monde. Nouveau journal des voyages published under the direction of M. Édouard Charton and illustrated by our most famous artists. Librairie Hachette. Paris / London. 1860 - 1st semester 1879. 37 volumes in-4. Contemporary army-green silk-grained half-percaline with corners, untrimmed, headpieces on spines, printed covers preserved. €1,200 Head of the series of the most formidable travel journal of the second half of the 19th century. It offers in pre-publication all the great exploration stories - in original French editions or in translation - of the period, especially those from the last terra incognita: Central Africa and the Poles. Aware of new readers' interest in all that was stirring minds at the time, Louis Hachette sought to surround himself with enterprising collaborators to whom he could entrust the direction of new collections. Édouard Charton had founded and directed the Magasin pittoresque in 1833, then helped launch L'Illustration in 1843. Louis Hachette entrusted him with the management of this new journal devoted to travel, which was to introduce readers to the new expeditions that were setting out to discover the world, with the editor responsible for "informing his readers [...] of the fatigues they have endured, the dangers of all kinds they have encountered, the curiosities of the countries they have visited, and the manners and customs of the inhabitants". (Archives Hachette, quoted by J.-Y. Mollier). Numerous woodcut illustrations in and out of text. Exceptional edition on chine from the first twenty years of publication. Spotting due to damp on some lower corners, but overall of fine quality.

Lot 47 - Jane DIEULAFOY. A Suse, Journal des fouilles. Book containing 121 woodcuts and 1 map. Paris, France. Librairie Hachette et Cie. 1888. Large in-4 Jane DIEULAFOY. A Suse, Journal des fouilles. Book containing 121 woodcuts and 1 map. Paris, France. Librairie Hachette et Cie. 1888. Large in-4 (25.5 x 34.5 cm) with 1 blank f., 1 false title, 1 title in two colors (red), (2)-366 pp. 1 blank f., 1 color map. Publisher's binding. Midnight blue half-chagrin. Polychrome decoration on boards (large palm on a background of oriental motifs, seal on a gilded background with sphinx) and spine (titles on the same decorative background). First edition. In 1881 and 1882, the Dieulafoys, commissioned by the French government, explored Teheran, Isfahan, Shiraz and Baghdad. Jane Henriette Dieulafoy, née Magre (1851-1916), originally from Toulouse, traveled with her husband, an engineer and archaeologist. Dressed as a man, she was afraid of nothing and visited everything, aided by her knowledge of Persian, which she spoke fluently. The story of their expedition was published in 1887. They returned to Persia in 1884, accompanied by a young engineer, Charles Babin, and the naturalist Frédéric Houssay; they obtained permission from the Iranian government to excavate the site under certain conditions, in particular the sharing of the finds. Excavation took place during the winters of 1885 and 1886, and Dieulafoy's objective was to complete the excavation of the Apadana identified by Loftus. The excavations were carried out under difficult conditions: the researchers lived in tents, exposed to storms and brigand attacks in a region where the central government had little power. Nevertheless, the Dieulafoy expedition succeeded in sending numerous discoveries to the Louvre Museum. Numerous woodcuts in and out of text. Rare publisher's binding in fine condition.

Lot 49 - Saint Nicolas. Illustrated newspaper for boys & girls. Paris, France. Librairie de Ch. Delagrave [then Delagrave]. 1880-1915. Saint Nicolas. Illustrated newspaper for boys & girls. Paris, France. Librairie de Ch. Delagrave [then Delagrave]. 1880-1915. Thirty-two volumes in-8, then large in-8. Publisher's boards. Red percaline, beveled boards, gilt [or not]. Black and gold plate on the first cover: in the upper part, the head of St. Nicholas, a tall bearded man wearing a tiara; below, the shadowy figures of a boy and a girl reading on a gilded background; ornamentation of oak leaves and acorns. Complex decorative composition in black and gold on the spine. Publisher's monogram in black and gold in the center of the second cover. Collection, in hardback, of Delagrave's great children's magazine, launched in imitation of the American Saint Nicholas. Complete stories, contests, riddles, readers' letters... Like all publisher's magazines at the end of the 19th century, like Hetzel's Magasin d'éducation et de récréation, it was Delagrave's editorial backbone, helping to test new authors, prepare the launch of works by established authors, and build customer loyalty. Lavishly illustrated by M. Boutet de Monvel, Adrien Marie, Kauffmann, Geoffroy, Pinchon, Rabier... From 1903, the format changed slightly, and color plates appeared. The years 1897, 1906, 1908 and 1909 are missing, the first three years have suffered a little (faded spines on the first two, flecks on the spine of the third), the last years (1911 to 1914) are really rare. Nice set.

Lot 58 - Huguette de BOSQUE). Models of children's books. (France, circa 1950). Huguette de BOSQUE). Models of children's books. (France, circa 1950). Two different sets: one with 27 gouaches, size 32.8 x 25.2 cm, each accompanied by a handwritten text in French, plus four gouaches of the same size, plus pencil sketches on tracing paper (30), plus four gouaches (later improved drafts); the other with 30 smaller-format gouaches, 20 x 15 cm, cellophane-protected and mounted in makeshift marie-louise, accompanied by a text in English on loose sheets. A more disparate set of gouaches by the same author is included. Finished model of a 1950s children's book. What we assume to be the author's name appears on a kraft envelope attached to the set. The French version is the most beautiful: it includes thirty full-page, luminous gouaches on colored backgrounds, very typical of the period, but with a certain charm that evokes a slightly conventional wonder that heralds certain mass productions intended to appeal to the greatest number, such as those by Walt Disney. The story is set in the underwater world, and the graphics are irresistibly reminiscent of Disney Studios' The Little Mermaid. The English version takes up the same story, but the size of the gouaches is a little reduced (they've all been redrawn). While the illustrations are not lacking in interest, the text on the other hand is uncharacteristically silly: three young fish decide to attend a Water King's ball, get a little lost, end up seeing the king, the queen, the orchestra, run away, get lost, get scared... What an adventure! What an adventure! If the book has been published in either French or English, it's likely that the text has been revised and "muscled" to give it a vigor it lacks. The illustrations, on the other hand, deserve to be retained, as they bear witness, with a certain talent, to the evolution of the popular children's book in the 1950s, a hesitant period that abandoned the graphic audacity of the 1930s in search of a wider audience that would soon be captured by cinema and television.

Lot 99 - Geographical lottery (France, circa 1875) Geographical lottery (France, circa 1875). Wood-cardboard box, size 41.4 x 29 x 6 cm. Gilded globe and title on lid, embossed frame. The interior is divided into three compartments, containing: 24 game cards, oblong format 26.5 x 12 cm / 90 numbered boxwood counters / a wicker basket with bone tokens. The playing cards have two useful sides. One is a classic lotto board, in black, with fifteen numbers; the other has fifteen lithographed and colored squares, each assigned to a department, including Algeria: name of the department and capital, pictorial representation of a famous local child or local production or building. Boxwood pieces feature a number and the name of a département. The game can be played in two different ways: one is the most ordinary lotto game, where only the numbers are taken into account; the other is more educational, using the name of the département as a starting point from which players discover the name of the chief town and local specialities; the first is a little sad, the second is more cheerful, using the coloured side of the cards, which are very attractively decorated, no doubt to show children that education is a pleasure! Note that the game was published after the defeat of 1870, and the lost départements are depicted in mourning, in black on a blue-grey background. Each illustrated square features two three-digit numbers, the meaning of which remains a mystery. The cover is a little soiled, with some flaws on the edge.
