Lot 131 - Loto comique. M.-D. [Mauclair-Dacier] Publisher, Paris (circa 1900) Loto comique. M.-D. [Mauclair-Dacier] Publisher, Paris (circa 1900). Wood-cardboard box, size 29.5 x 36 x 5.8 cm. On the lid, a gilded, embossed frame delimits a rectangular space on a crimson background, featuring the title in gilded letters and a pasted-on chromolithograph showing children playing marbles on a sidewalk in front of a hairdresser's store. The interior is divided into six compartments, each containing: twice six chromolithographed cardboards, oblong format 15 x 19 cm / seventy-two cardboard discs, chromolithographed on each side, 3.3 cm in diameter / a wicker basket / an empty cloth bag / a cloth bag containing bone tokens. The ruler is glued to the back of the lid. Classic picture lotto game. On the front of each card is a comic scene (three on the theme of circuses and funfairs, three street scenes, a country lunch, a fishing trip, a family missing the train, a monkey lunch, a portrait session in an artist's studio, a photographer in the middle of a field); six circular slots have been die-cut into each scene, interrupting it and revealing the image of an object (comb, domino, bottle, watering can...). Each of the objects depicted on the cardboard cut-outs is matched by a cardboard disc, with the object depicted on one side and the scene fragment removed on the other. The game is based on the principle of lotto: all the discs are placed in a bag, the cards are distributed among the players, the leader draws a disc and names the object represented, which is then claimed by the player who has the corresponding card; each disc placed allows the missing part of the scene to be reconstituted, and the winner is the player who has completed his card(s). The game can also be used as an elementary puzzle for younger players. Beautifully crafted lotto published by Mauclair-Dacier; in perfect condition. Provenance handwritten on the back of the cover (Maman / Janvier 1904).

Lot 141 - Grand loto des mots historiques. Saussine, Edit. Paris (circa 1900) Grand loto des mots historiques. Saussine, Edit. Paris (circa 1900). Wood-cardboard box, size 37.5 x 29 x 4.5 cm. Chromolithography on the lid: central scene showing Clovis at the battle of Tolbiac, a different historical scene in each corner (Napoleon in Egypt, Henri IV at Rocroy, Louis XIV, Daumesnil at Vincennes); these scenes are separated by banners inscribed with famous phrases. The inside of the box is divided into three sections, and contains: twelve 20.7 x 13.5 cm cards with a chromolithograph glued to the front, showing three historical scenes in which a famous word is uttered, with a small banner below each image bearing a fragment of the famous phrase and the date; thirty-six small 6.5 x 3 cm cards reproducing the banners below the images; a large bag (to hold the small cards), a small bag of betting chips, and a cardboard basket. Historical and educational lotto game. The small cards are placed in the large bag, and the cards are distributed among the players, each of whom places a bet. The cards are drawn one by one from the bag, the game master reads the fragment of a sentence, the player who has the corresponding scene on one of his cards completes the sentence and gets the card back; eventually, he doesn't get off scot-free, and has to explain the scene, situate it in the historical context and all those academic details that spoil everything! The first player to complete his cards wins. In beautiful condition.

Lot 142 - Memorable facts from French history. Memorable facts in French history. Watilliaux. Paris (circa 1900). Wood-cardboard box, size 38 x 30 x 4.5 cm. Two-tone lithograph on the lid (Lith. E. Historical lotto game published by Watilliaux. The eighteen illustrated boards - lithographs after Ferdinand Bastin - offer a pictorial panorama of French history, from Gaul to the defeat at Sedan. Each card (numbered from 1 to 18), devoted to a specific period, follows the same pattern: at the top, the designation of the period and the name of the king(s), surmounted by a large central scene representative of the period (Coronation of Charlemagne, Battle of Rocroi, Abdication of Napoleon I...); on either side of the illustration, two cartouches with dated facts. There are thus five episodes inscribed on each card, each marked with a sign inscribed in a circle. Each of these episodes is inscribed on one of the cardboard discs pulled from the bag. A fine copy of this educational game, complete with its booklet commenting on the major historical facts presented in the game; at the end of the booklet is an interesting 40-page catalog of Watilliaux's productions.

Lot 153 - The Attack. New game - Military tactics. (France, circa 1910). L'Attaque. New game - Military tactics. (France, circa 1910). Wooden-cardboard box, size 33 x 19 x 4.2 cm, covered with chocolate paper, gold title oblique on the lid. It contains a cardboard game board, format 33 x 30 cm, foldable in two, cut into squares and 72 lithographed and stencil-colored cardboard cards (2.4 x 5.7 cm), mounted on metal bases. The ruler in French is laminated under the cover. 350 €. Military strategy game. The 72 cards represent two armies, French and English. Each army's 36 pieces include four mines, a flag, a spy and thirty soldiers of all ranks, from scout to army commander; each soldier is numbered from 2 to 10. The armies are divided between two players, each occupying a part of the field; the cards are placed on the squares, with the images facing the player so that the opponent cannot see them. The aim of the game is to capture your opponent's flag by moving your pieces towards your opponent's field. The meeting of two pieces ("Attack") results in victory and defeat: lower ranks are taken by higher ranks; mines don't move, and blow up all pieces that attack them, except sappers, who take them; the spy can be taken by all, but is the only one who can take the army commander. The game was patented in 1908 by Hermance Edan under the title Jeu de bataille avec pièces mobiles sur damier, and obtained in 1909. It had little success in France, but excited the English. In France, spirits were driven by the desire for revenge, so it's curious that the adversary, the villain, here is the English rather than the German: the long history of enmity between the two countries and recent colonial rivalries (Fachoda, among others) surely explain this state of affairs. Of course, as soon as the 1914 war broke out, Germany took the place of the enemy army, and from 1920 onwards, the English publisher Gibson, who had obtained the rights, published several reprints, featuring this version of course, but also others pitting the armies of different countries against each other. Fine condition.

Lot 170 - The Universal Post Office. New instructive board game. (France, circa 1905). La Poste universelle. New instructive board game. (France, circa 1905). Wood-cardboard box, size 40.3 x 28.8 x 4.5 cm. Title in gold lettering on blue background on lid. The interior is compartmentalized and contains twelve large cardboard boxes (15 x 21.3 cm) with a chromolithograph pasted on the front / a box containing 96 small numbered cardboard boxes (3.8 x 4.6 cm) with a flag or stamp on the front / a basket / two boxes containing cardboard tokens / a large cloth bag. Lotto game dedicated to the Post Office in forty-eight countries around the world. Each large card features a full-colour image on the front showing four scenes of mail delivery in four different countries. The top right-hand corner features the country's flag, and the bottom left-hand corner a stamp. The forty-eight countries are grouped as follows: twenty-one in Europe, nine in Asia, six in Africa, ten in America and two in Oceania. The 96 small cards are numbered: 48 bear a reproduction of a stamp, 48 a reproduction of a flag. It's a classic lotto game: the large cards are divided up according to the number of players, each one places a bet, the small cards are placed in the bag and drawn one by one, announcing the name of the country represented, the player who has the double on his large card places it, the first to fill his cards wins. The game obviously has an educational dimension, as it shows images in different countries, and players are sure to name the corresponding capitals while recording the representation of the corresponding flags. One of the small cards, lost, has been replaced by a homemade twin with a spelling error (n°30: Madagascar). Interesting imagery, and evocations of the work of postal workers in the various countries are not lacking in piquancy, some of them practicing a profession that does not appear to be a relaxing one.
