Lot 24 - (1498). JUVENAL. FAMILIARE COMENTU CUM ANTONII MANCINELLI viri eruditissimi explanatione. Argumenta satyrarum juvenalis per Antonium Mancinellum... Lyon, Nicolas Wolf for Etienne Gaynard, December 14, 1498. In-4° gothic, [6]-198 leaves, modern basane, gilt fleurons in the center and corners, cold-stamped fillets (modern pastiche binding). ORIGINAL EDITION OF THE SATYRES OF JUVENAL with commentary by Badius, which reproduces, with corrections by the editor, the Venice edition of 1492 with commentary by Mancinelli. The title, printed in red and black, is illustrated with a fine three-compartment woodcut of Mancinelli, Juvenal and Badius, drawn by Guillaume Leroy and reproduced by Baudrier. This rare edition in Gothic type is remarkable, as Vingtrinier and Claudin point out: "Etienne Gueynard had several Lyon printers, such as Wolf, work for him. All his editions are remarkable for the luxurious ornamentation of the historiated letters, and are always decorated with woodcuts. Nicolas Wolf was a founder and printer in Lyon from 1492 to 1512. He printed several works for the bookseller Gaynard, and made a name for himself by printing this book by Juvenal, corrected and commented by Josse Bade". Minor soiling on a few leaves, some words underlined and lines in old handwriting on the title page. One spine split over several centimeters, a wide-margined copy. Handwritten bookplate of a religious institution (A. Claudin. Archives du bibliophile, n° 187 janvier 188) (Baudrier XI, 190, 218) (Renouard, Badius, II, 535) (ISTC, ij00656000).

Lot 41 - (1507). HEURES A L'USAIGE DE ROME tout au long sans rien requerir. With figures of the life of man and the destruction of Hierusalem. At the end: Les présentes heures... ont été nouvellement imprimées à Paris par Guillaume Anabat... pour Gillet Hardouyn... et Germain Hardouyn, (cal. de 1507 à 1520). 1 volume, large in-8 (210 x 126), 116 leaves, Gothic script, lavaliere morocco, wide gilt decoration with small irons on the boards in a succession of frieze frames, foliage decoration in the center with the gilt initials F.A.T. in a medallion, smooth spine decorated with the same, 4 green, white and pink silk bookmarks, the ends of which are joined together in a small gusset embroidered with gold thread, gilt edges, one chased clasp (of 2). (early 17th century binding). Superb copy printed on vellum, with all figures, large and small, miniaturized, with gold highlights in the period. In addition to the Hardouyn centaur mark and the anatomical man framed by 4 vignettes, the very rich illustration is made up of 19 LARGE FIGURES, 24 SMALLER FIGURES and wide, rich borders, featuring loves supporting garlands, antique-style foliage, medallions with helmeted heads, religious or military scenes... The large figures - very well done and fine, in rich portico frames - represent: St. John Poisoned (8v) - Christ's Arrest (11v) - The 4 Virtues (16v) - Annunciation (17r) - Sybil of Tibur (24r) - Flagellation (28v) - Crucifixion (29r) - Pentecost (30r) - Nativity (31r) - Song of David (34r) - Adoration of the Magi (37r) - Adoration of the Wise Men (37r) - The Nativity (31r) - The Crucifixion (29r). Adoration of the Magi (37r) - Presentation in the Temple (40r) - Flight into Egypt (43) - The Dormition of the Virgin Mary (47r) - Davide and Uriah (55v) - Death of Uriah (56r) - Parable of Lazarus (64r) - Resurrection of Lazarus (65v) - Assumption (100r). The figure of the flagellation and that of the Virgin surrounded by her mystical attributes are particularly beautiful and large (165 x 105). A very fresh copy, with initials and line ends painted in gold on a colored background. The 4 bookmarks are held together by gold thread in a small gold-embroidered fabric gusset, probably intended to enclose a relic. After X-raying and scanning the gusset (we thank Madame Cécile Delpech, bibliophile-dentist, for her help), it could contain hair, but impossible to detect. A few minor flaws and traces of soiling. (Lacombe, n°159, small diff.) (Brun, p. 210) (Mortimer, French n°295) (Brunet V, p.1633 n°229).

Lot 72 - (1516). BIBLIA cum concordantiis veteris et novi testamentis [...]. Lyon, Jacques Sacon for Antoine Kobetger of Nremberg, December 17, 1516. Gothic 2-column folio of [14]-317-1bl.-[25] leaves, cold-stamped calf, woodgrain sown with small flowers (poppies?) within a lattice decoration (period binding). A precious copy of this early 16th-century illustrated Bible. It is the first of five Bibles printed by Jacques Sacon in Lyon between 1516 and 1522 for the famous Nuremberg printer-librarian Antoine Koberger; it is dated December 17, 1516 with Sacon's large mark, reproduced by Baudrier (XII, 309). The title, printed in red and black, features a large woodcut depicting St. John the Baptist, 2 full-page woodcuts showing the six days of Creation and the adoration of the Magi, and a half-page woodcut depicting King Solomon asleep." The large title vignette depicting St. John the Baptist was later passed on to Corneille de Septgranges and used by this printer in the 1556 Lyon missal. 3 sets of vignettes, 2 rectangular and one smaller for the gospels... "(Baudrier). "The figures in this edition were engraved after those in the Venice Bible, 1498, in-4°; they are found in several reprints of the same Bible made in Lyon, notably in that of 1516, impressa Lugduni, per M. Jacobum Sacon, expensis notabilis viri Anthonii Koberger, in 1516, December 16, in-folio." (Brunet). The text is adorned with 3 suites of vignettes, one set in Renaissance frames, (83 x 65 mm) and 1 smaller one (41 x 60 mm), for the Gospels, totalling 89 +23+29 or 141 FINE WOODEN ENGRAVINGS. Numerous handwritten annotations from the period, old restorations to the binding, one leaf restored in the margin without missing text. Ex-libris André Cade, doctor from Lyon. (Baudrier XII, 339-340) (Brunet I, 874-75) (Adams B-993) (USTC 144530).

Lot 75 - (1516). MANTUAN (Baptiste). AD MORTALIUM OBLECTATIONEM AUCTORIS EFFIGIEM HUIC DIVINO OPERI. ULTIMA PARS OPERIS. Lyon, impressa solertia Stephani de Basignana, in officina Bernard Lescuyer, June 1516. In-8 of 126 leaves, light calf, boards decorated with multiple gilt and cold fillets with a frame decorated with a chain of linked tassels with repeated gilt "eternal knot" motifs in the center, double hot and cold framing, gilt and chased edges, modern slipcase (period binding). RARISSIVE PRODUCTION BY ETIENNE DE BASIGNANA, a Carmelite monk and remarkable typographer who printed only 2 books: a book of hours and, for Bernard Lescuyer, the works of Mantuan, general of his order. Spagnioli's works, made up of 2 parts that subdivide themselves, could be sold separately, as Brunet indicates. This copy includes the "De Sacris Diebus", which is in its original edition. The printing of this volume rivals that of the greatest typographers. The title, printed in red and black, is adorned with the effigy of Baptiste Mantuan. "This is one of the earliest examples of the use of portraiture in book illustration" (Brun). The last leaf is decorated with the arms of Cardinal de Gonzague. Title browned, wormholes repaired, small well-executed repairs to a few leaves, second board almost detached, endpapers replaced, quire d, and q8 slightly wormed and almost unbound. Interesting Italian binding whose combination of the 2 binding motifs seems very unusual according to Goldschmidt (Gothic and Renaissance Bookbindings, 1928, I, p. 226). From the libraries of Carolus Hippolitus Tedeschius (contemporary signature on blank q7). and Michel Wittock with his bookplate. (Baudrier II, 3-10) (USTC 155285) (Brunet III, 1375) (Brun, p. 253).
