Lot 221 - (1547). BOCCACE (Giovanni). DELLA GENEALOGIA DE GLI DEI LIBRI QUINDECI. Venice, Comino da Trino, 1547. In-4° of [8]-286-[18] leaves, stiff vellum (contemporary binding). Second edition of the translation by Giuseppe Betussi (1520-1575), first published in Venice in 1545. Born in Bassano, a close friend of Pierre Aretin and translator of Boccaccio, he went on to manage Giolito's printing works in Venice. This "Genealogy of the Gods" is divided into 15 books and contains the entire mythological system of the ancients. It deals with gods, goddesses, genies, demigods and heroes, who are said to be the children of the gods. The last 2 books contain the definition of poetry, its origin and its usefulness. Boccaccio worked on them for over twenty-five years. Copy a little out of its binding, small repair to the title and last introductory leaf with a hole, wetness on the first few leaves (USTC, 814826, 11 ex.).

Lot 222 - (1547). HOLBEIN. ICONES HISTORIARUM VETERIS TESTAMENTI. Lyon, Jean Frellon, 1547. Small in-4° of 52 leaves, fawn calf on wood, set of cold fillets on the boards, spine with 3 nerves (Josse Schavye, handwritten signature). This new edition of Holbein's Bible Figures contains 98 FIGURES, 6 more than the 1538 edition; the 4 Evangelist figures on the verso of the penultimate leaf appear here for the first time. There are two different editions of this work. This one, with its highly inked proofs, belongs to the second edition, with the word Emendatiores in the title unhyphenated. A quatrain by Gilles Corrozet in French is placed under each figure, and a commentary in Latin occupies the top of each page. Some pages foxed and trimmed short at head with slight loss, headbands worn, spidering, last leaf soiled (Cartier no. 93) (USTC 29616, 8 copies).

Lot 224 - (1547). MARGUERITE DE NAVARRE. MARGUERITE DES PRINCESSES. Lyon, Jean de Tournes 1547. 2 volumes in-12 of 541-[2] and 342-[2] pages, ruby morocco, triple gilt fillet, richly decorated ribbed spines, emerald morocco lining, double guard, gilt edges (M. Godillot). The most sought-after edition of these poems, "of which well-preserved copies are rare" says Brunet. It was published by Jehan de la Haye, valet de chambre to the Queen. Only the miroir de l'Ame pécheresse and the fable du faux Cuyder, containing the story of the Nymphs of Diana, had been published previously. The tale entitled "La coche" is illustrated with 10 vignettes (45 x 71) by Bernard Salomon. "The first, depicting an assembly of lords and ladies in an extensive landscape, is a masterpiece of wood engraving for the astonishing finesse of the carvings, the science of the foliage, the balance of the planes..." (Brun). A very fine copy with wide margins (H. 168 mm) in perfect bindings by Marcel Godillot, who worked for Marot-Rodde, then settled in Paris from 1938 to 1975 (Tchémerzine IV, 366) (Rothschild n°626) (Cartier n°105) (Mortimer French, n°365. Basel, Jean Oporin, 1548. 2 parts of [12]-251-1bl.-[12]-281 col.-[20] pages bound in 1 volume in-folio, fawn calf, boards decorated with a rich composition of gilded interlacing with azure fleurons, scroll enhanced with black wax surrounded by three framing gilded fillets, central cartouche adorned with a gilded crowned M, ribbed spine adorned with fleurons, gilded edges, red morocco case sheathed in emerald moire, gilded clasps (period binding). First edition of the Latin translation and scholarly commentary by Jerome Wolf (1516-1580), librarian to the famous banker Fugger. SUPERB, EXTREMELY ELEGANT PAINTED BINDING, produced between 1549 and 1551 for Thomas Wotton by one of the greatest Parisian workshops of the mid-16th century. The copy, entirely ruled in red ink, comes from the Charles Van der Elst library, with ex-libris, and is preserved in a modern red morocco box decorated with gilded fillets indicating in large gilded characters that it belonged to Mary Stuart. Lot 226 - (1548). ALCIAT (A). EMBLEMATA. Lyon, G. Rouille, 1548. In-8, 164-[4] pages, brown calf, gilt Renaissance medallion at center of covers, gilt fillet, spine ribbed (later binding). A famous collection of illustrated quatrains, extraordinarily popular in the 16th century, from which the artists of the day drew their allegorical interpretations of symbols. These 129 EMBLEMS, attributed to Le Petit-Bernard, are large (65 x 60 mm) and presented in handsome, wide frames. They appear here for the first time and are by Lyon artist Pierre Vase. Rare first edition of this collection of Latin poems adorned with a fine woodcut portrait of Théodore de Bèze at the age of 29; it contains a few libertine pieces that disappeared from later editions. Penciled MR initials on title. Corners rubbed, darkening of the outer margin of the entire volume (Renouard, Estienne, 148-16) (USTC, 150109, 27 ex.).

Lot 229 - (1548). CATULLE - TIBULLE - PROPERCE. HIS ACCESSERUNT CORN. GALLI FRAGMENTA. Lyon, Sébastien Gryphe, 1548. In-16, 336 pages, boards entirely covered with white, blue, lemon and red wax listels forming compartments with geometric decorations on a background of gilded dotted lines, with coats of arms also mosaicked in the center of the boards, smooth mosaic spine interspersed with dotted lines, gilded and chased edges (antique binding with later decoration). Fine Lyon italic printing, ruled with abundant contemporary handwritten annotations in the first part. The copy is entirely ruled in red. An astonishing and rare binding, whose rich wax decoration can with certainty be attributed to THEODORE HAGUE (1823-1891), a forger who specialized in this field. He fooled a large number of connoisseurs, including the wealthy American John Blacker, who unknowingly purchased many of these faked bindings! A large part of his library was dispersed in London in 1897 by his son. Fine condition (Baudrier VIII, 220) (USTC, 149939).

This edition contains the De officiis, De amicitia, De senectute, the Paradoxa and the Somnium Scipionis with commentaries by Josse Bade, Pietro Marso, Ognibene Bonisoli, Martino Filetico and Francesco Maturanzio. The 3 books of the De Officis and the other treatises have an attractive woodcut vignette showing Cicero writing in a baroque frame. A good copy. (USTC 822310).

Venice, Gabriel Giolito de Ferrari, 1549 (vol. 1 and 1548 for vol. 2). 2 volumes of 374-[26] pages and [3]-177-[11]-1bl. leaves, bound in 1 volume in-8, stiff vellum, richly decorated spine, blue edges (later binding). "This collection was a considerable success, in both commercial and literary terms, and set the model for a form of publishing of poetic texts, with a totalizing vocation, offering all Italian authors, destined to continue until the end of the century. The volume is dedicated to Don Hurtado de Mendoza, Spanish ambassador to Venice from 1539 to 1547, before taking up his post in Rome. Mendoza was known as a collector of antique manuscripts and a bibliophile". (Barbier-Mueller). This third edition, published in 1549, bears the Libro primo on the title, added on the second-issue copies of 1546, since a Libro secondo had meanwhile been published in 1548. Some foxing on the title, but a fine copy. From the library of the Marquis de Terzi with his bookplate (Cat. of his sale in 1861 n°960) (USTC, 803371).

Lot 233 - (1549). ALCIAT. EMBLEMES, DE NOUVEAU TRANSLATEZ EN FRANÇOIS VERS POUR VERS IOUXTE LES LATINS. Lyon, Guillaume Rouille, 1549. In-8, 267-[5] pages, black calf, boards cold-stamped in the manner of the 16th century, ribbed spine, red edges (Petit, successor to Simier). One of the finest editions of Alciat's emblems. This famous collection of illustrated quatrains was extraordinarily popular in the 16th century, attracting the allegorical interpretations of symbols by the artists of the day. This Lyon edition is illustrated with a large architectural title frame and 200 pretty unsigned figures; the latter, remarkably woodcut, are larger than those of earlier editions and set in large baroque frames. Translator Barthélémy Aneau has arranged these emblems by commonplace, and states in the preface: "Chacun aura dans ce petit livre, tout ce qu'il vouldra inscrirera ou pindre aux murailles de la maison, aux verrières, tapis, couvertures, tableaux, images, tables, licts, brief à toutes pièces ou ustensiles en tous lieux". This copy bears the box on page 178 indicated by Baudrier. A few emblems have been colored, and a notebook has been placed upside down in the binding. Hinges weakened. (Baudrier IX, 158. First edition of this history of the Visconti dynasty illustrated with 10 SPLENDID ENGRAVED PORTRAITS ON WOOD OF THE DUCS OF MILAN. These woodcuts, signed with a Lorraine cross, are attributed to Geoffroy Tory (see Fairfax-Murray), but may be by Woeriot (see Schreiber). These 10 portraits (130 x 98), each accompanied by a note in which the editor indicates the location of the work he used as a model, are faithful copies of the miniatures in the manuscript preserved at the BNF. A good copy to which a woodcut portrait of the author has been added. Signature of a Burgundian bibliophile "De Migieu" dated 1572 on the last leaf. Armorial bookplate of Nicolas de Richard d'Ivry (1762-1850) mayor of Beaune, with the motto "Virtute non auro". Some spotting to boards, one spine split. In-8, [64]-572 pages, light calf, boards richly embossed with a central semis of tiger tassels on the first board and fleurs-de-lis on the second, all framed with religious vignettes (period binding). Second edition, first published in 1543. Tagault's surgery was extremely popular, and was still being reprinted and translated in the 17th century. It is illustrated with several devices, surgical instruments and 4 finely engraved full-page woodcuts showing "a body wounded in several ways" and 3 skeletons seen from the front, back and profile.this Lyon edition is augmented by Jacques Hallier's De Materia Chirurgica. The first edition of Denys d'Halicarnasse's Antiquités was printed by Estienne in 1547, i.e. only 2 years before Froben's edition, which includes the Latin translation by Sigismond Gelenius and a chronology by the Swiss polymath Henri Glareanus (1488-1563). Beautiful Basel printing by Nicolas Froben and Nicolas Episcopius, embellished with large, handsome historiated lettering. Abundant handwritten annotations throughout the volume, repair to margin of title, 2 leaves with foxing, ex. with good margins. Lot 239 - (1549). TORY (Geofroy). L'ART ET SCIENCE DE LA VRAYE PROPORTION DES LETTRES ATTIQUES ou Antiques, autrement dictes, Romaines, selon le corps et le visaige humain... d'Avantage la manière d'ordonner la langue Françoise... le tout inventé, par Maistre Geoffroy Tory de Bourges. Paris, Vivant Gaultherot, August 26, 1549. In-8 of [16]-144 (mal chiffr. 136)-[24] leaves, overlapping vellum (contemporary binding). Champfleury's second edition exactly reproduces the text of the first. It was in this work, divided into 4 parts, that he proposed the use of apostrophes, accents and the cedilla. The first 3 deal with the shape of letters, compared with the proportions of the body - "the most beautiful thing in the world", according to Tory - and are illustrated with a large number of woodcuts representing capital letters placed in human bodies. The fourth and last section describes the reproduction of Hebraic, Greek, Latin and Chaldean alphabets, as well as bastard and fantastic letterforms, flowery letters and intertwined numerals. A very rare book, Backer's copy lacked the last leaf, advertised as blank, but which in fact contains the "achevé d'imprimer". Brunet indicates 22 numbered leaves instead of 24. 2 leaves reproduced in facsimile (G8-R7), the copy is in good condition in its original binding. Sixteenth-century motto "Non est mortale quod opto" on last leaf and eighteenth-century bookplate "Ce présent livre appartiens à Bouvet". (USTC 24307) (Mortimer French, n°526).

Lot 240 - (1550). APIAN- WALDSEEMULLER. COSMOGRAPHIAE INTRODUCTIO. Paris, Guillaume Cavellat, 1550. In-12 of 46-2 (last bl.) leaves, stiff vellum (antique binding). First Parisian edition, decorated with an armillary sphere on the title and 27 ENGRAVED WOODEN FIGURES in the text, 4 of which are full-page. Chapter 28 is devoted to America. The first edition of this work was published in Ingolstadt in 1529. An astronomer and mathematician born in Leisnig, Saxony, Peter Bienewitz, known as Petrus Apianus or Peter Apian (1495-1552), was the author in 1520 of a planisphere showing the New World (Tipus Orbis Universalis), which complemented the work of Martin Waldseemuller. He was also one of the first to propose the observation of moon movements to determine longitudes. A good copy, sprinkled with handwritten annotations from the period. Traces of wetness in the lower corners of the leaves (USTC 150456, 12 copies).

Superb 2-column Greek printing procured by Erasmus, with the second part profusely annotated in the margins in very fine handwriting by a scholar of the period. Vertical wormholes on the first 150 pages, corner rings on the last leaves. The last page is flyleaf. Old handwritten bookplates. A V has been added in pen to change the date to 1555 (Adams A, 1732) (USTC, 600154).

A fine copy set in a delightful "Lyonnaise" wax mosaic binding. The decoration is virtually identical to that of binding no. 46, described by Rahir in "Livres dans de riches reliures". Volume 2 of Sébastien Gryphe's 5-volume Bible. Fine restoration to spine (Baudrier VIII, 238).

"Des causes cachées des choses" is a treatise presented as a dialogue with 3 characters. Fernel describes epidemic, endemic, virulent and contagious diseases, including rabies and elephantiasis. In-folio of [24]-718 (out of 891-33) pages, red half-chagrin, ribbed spine decorated with gilt fillets, gilt edges (19th century binding). Rare second edition of the most popular work on the cabala in the 16th century, which was condemned by the church as favoring the rabbis. Galatinus, a famous Franciscan cabalist, wrote the De Arcanis in 12 books to support Reuchlin's thesis; his work is composed in the form of a dialogue between Reuchlin, referred to as Capnio, the Dominican inquisitor Hochstraat and Galatinus himself. The pages are filled with Greek quotations and Hebrew texts. The latter, numbering 30, had been bequeathed to the Vatican library during the author's lifetime, and anyone wishing to appropriate them was excommunicated by the Pope himself. Reuchlin's De Arte Cabalistica (pp. 719-891) is not bound in this copy. 2 stamps on title, small ring in margin of last 20 leaves (USTC, 683604).

In-12 of [16]-216 pages, light calf, boards decorated with gilt fleurons at the corners and center of the boards, cold framing, modern wooden case (period binding). VERY RARE FIRST EDITION. Jacques Peletier du Mans (1517-1582), professor of mathematics, Latinist and translator, physician, poet and grammarian, sets out his program for reforming French spelling. He abolished double consonants when pronunciation reveals only one; he also distinguished between u and v, i and j, etc... These rational distinctions were not definitively established in France until a century later, and are among the most important works on French spelling of the 16th century. Light rings in the corners of the first and last leaves, very well-executed restorations to the spine and boards. Edition by Thierry de Beauvais, whose text is surrounded by extensive commentaries by famous humanists: Etienne Dolet, Erasmus, Mélanchton, Scaliger, Bembo, etc... The illustration includes a series of 149 CHARMING ILLUSTRATIONS in archaic style, borrowed from an Italian edition and depicting the actors at the beginning of each scene "à ce commodes et utiles", says the privilege. On the boards the arms of Toulouse and the (partially faded) inscription "Datum ab octoviris capitolinis 1678" (Given by the eight men of the Capitol in 1678). In addition to its typographical beauty, Paradin's account is not without merit, "not that we should place much confidence in it, but there is a charm and real interest in the bonhomie of the narration and style". It is also in this work that Paradin mentions 2 inventions from Germany: one pernicious and damnable, the art of making fire artillery, and the other, printing, "a profitable and happy discovery and its way of mollifying scripts and books, and by its excellence and nobility is nothing other than sweet peace, perfect love and entire pleasure". "A pure masterpiece of the Lyon school" (Brun). First edition of this beautiful and rare pictorial Bible, dedicated to Jeanne de La Rochefoucauld, abbess of N.-D. de Saintes. The first volume contains the quadrins relating to Genesis; the second, in addition to Exodus, includes the quadrins relating to the other books of the Bible: Leviticus, Judges, Kings... There are 74 quadrins in the first volume and 125 in the second, for a total of 199, each adorned with a woodcut figure. These remarkable figures are attributed to Bernard Salomon, known as Le Petit Bernard, and are rightly considered the artist's masterpiece. These 2 volumes are in FIRST EDITION, in very fine proofs. Rare first edition of a scientific treatise by Jean Borrel (or Johannes Buteo), a mathematician from Dauphiné born in 1492, who was a pupil of cartographer Oronce Finé in Paris. The treatise is lavishly illustrated with diagrams and curious woodcuts. It is divided into 15 major chapters on different subjects: the construction of Noah's Ark, squaring the circle, river waters, Caesar's aqueduct-bridge, islands... The first 9 deal with mechanical, arithmetic and geometric problems. This is the most interesting book by the author, who later fell out with his master, before retiring to his estate in Balan, a popular place for the abbots of Saint-Antoine; one plate shows the author's house. Claude Dariot (1533-1594), a Beaune-born physicist, set out the general principles of astrology and the rules of solar astrology, with the influence of the planets on daily terrestrial events. His treatise contains innovative approaches for the time: Dariot added to the traditional 4 elements (Water, Air, Fire, Earth), the 3 alchemical principles (Mercury, Sulfur and Salt). According to him, these 3 principles form the basis of all beings! At the time of printing, the book had one sheet with instructions for mounting the scrolls and another with the uncut moving parts; in this copy, the instructions have fortunately been preserved and glued to the bottom of page 11 with the 3 scrolls mounted and effective. Born in Urbino, he lived in England for some 50 years. This book is the most important of his writing career, as it contains important passages on the history of printing and the history of medicine. "Lyon edition shared with the heirs of Sébastien Gryphe, which explains the presence of the achevé d'imprimer, which is exceptional in Tournésian imprints" (Cartier). In his dedication dated August 1, 1558 to Prince Charles, Cardinal of Lorraine, Symeoni (1509-1575) indicates that he composed the text in 2 languages. This French version was the first to be printed, while the second in Italian was dated August 20th of the same year: "This work, admirably printed, is adorned with 51 woodcuts reproducing inscriptions, ancient steles, medals and statues. Some vignettes attributed to Bernard Salomon are of great merit, in particular, p. 29, the Fountain of Vaucluse, p. 96, the Fountain of Anet and p. 97 the metamorphosis of Actéon. And also 12 wooden signs of the zodiac in the Roman calendar. The ingenuity of the layout is quite remarkable". (Brun, Le livre illustré de la Renaissance, p. 294). A very good copy. In-folio of 248-[6] pages, stiff vellum (period binding). First Italian edition unknown to Baudrier at this date, and ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL LYONIAN BOOKS OF THE 16th CENTURY. Its illustration, attributed by Baudrier to Pierre Eskrich, identical to the French edition published 2 years earlier, includes 554 MEDAL REPRODUCTIONS AND 47 miscellaneous woodcuts, including 5 full-page "largely executed". Continued: - DISCORSO SOPRA LA CASTRAMETATIONE ET DISCIPLINA MILITARE DE ROMANI Lyon, G. Rouille, 1555. 2 parts of [8]-102-2bl. 1 folding plate-38-[9]-1bl. pages 37 figures depicting Roman soldiers, war machines and a folding plate for the plan of a Roman camp and 6 large figures for baths (USTC 154385-154274) (Baudrier pour la Castramentation IX, 220). 2 quires interchanged at binding, Mailly's armorial bookplate, with motto "Hogne qui vonra" and his signature on title. Lot 308 - (1559). BUTEO-[BORREL (Jean)]. OPERA GEOMETRICA... Lyon, Michel Jove, 1559 (In fine Thomas Bertheau, 1554) In-4°, 158-[2] pages, contemporary soft vellum, double gilt fillet on covers, gilt Renaissance motif at center of covers, gilt edges, remnants of green silk fastenings, in modern red half-maroquin folder and slipcase. Second edition of this treatise by Jean Borrel (or Johannes Buteo), a Dauphin mathematician born in 1492 and a pupil of cartographer Oronce Finé in Paris, of which only the first 6 leaves, including the title, have been altered from the original (see 1554). The treatise is lavishly illustrated with diagrams and curious woodcuts, and is divided into 15 main chapters on different subjects: the construction of Noah's Ark, squaring the circle, river waters, Caesar's aqueduct-bridge, islands... The first 9 deal with mechanical, arithmetic and geometric problems. This is the most interesting book by the author, who later quarreled with Oronce Finé, before retiring to his estate at Balan, a popular place for the abbots of Saint-Antoine; one plate shows the author's house. A magnificent copy, kept pure in its gilt-stamped vellum, which has preserved large margins. (USTC 152716) (Adams B-3357).

Lot 309 - (1559). ARATOS DE SOLES. PHENOMENA. Paris, Guillaume Morel, 1559. In-4°, [4]-132 pages, lavaliere calf, gilt fillet on covers, ornate ribbed spine (17th century binding). Greek version of the poem "Les Phénomènes", composed by the Greek astronomer and poet. The latter composed one hundred acrostics totalling 1154 verses in Greek, recounting the main phenomena that still intrigue us today (rainbows, aurora borealis, cyclones, constellations, etc.). Such was the popularity of Phenomena that it became the most widely read poem in antiquity, after Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. The first 56 acrostics are accompanied by their Latin translations, handwritten at the time. Fine Greek printing by Guillaume Morel, the King's printer for the Greek language. The 2 plates are in the part printed in Latin that is sometimes found with the Greek text. Spine entirely rebound (USTC, 152724).

Reprint of the edition first published by Sébastien Gryphe in 1542, illustrated with 105 woodcuts in the text, 3 of which (Mathieu, Luc and Jean) bear the monogram I.F., and appear to be the work of Johan Franck after Baudrier, Jacques Faber after Vogelin and Jean Froben after Didot. Description of the Limagne d'Auvergne, in which Syméoni identifies the site of Gergovie, illustrated with 59 woodcuts by Pierre Vase and 2 other woodcuts: the author's tomb and a view of the château de Polignac (p. 192), which appear for the first time and "reveal the talent and incomparable craftsmanship of the Master with the Capeline" (Baudrier). THE LARGE REPLICATED MAP, DRAWN BY SYMEONI, IS THE FIRST OF AUVERGNE, and was used by Ortélius and Blaeu. In-folio of [22]-225-[14] pages, brown calf, cold-stamped boards, ribbed spine (period binding). Description of the city, especially the Amphitheatre, the Maison carrée, the Temple de la Fontaine and the tombs, all of which are carefully described. The illustration includes a handsome title frame, 14 DOUBLE OFF-TEXT PLATES mounted in 7 plates that were mounted at the time, namely: La Maison carrée (2) - Temple de la Fontaine (2) - Pont du Gard (1) - Amphithéatre dict les Arènes (2), 4 full-page figures representing a plan of the city walls, a view of the city and two statues, as well as 5 vignettes of numismatics and epigraphy, all wood-engraved. The volume ends with a table of places, cities and rivers. Two curious chapters concern mullet fishing in the Etang de Latera and the "petits fromaiges vermeillons" made in Les Baux de Provence. Handwritten bookplate at the bottom of the title "Sum Georgii a Werdenstein". (1542-1608), canon of Augsburg, bibliophile and musicologist with one of the largest libraries of his time.

Johannes Honter (1498-1549) first published his Rudimenta Cosmographica in 1530 with just 2 maps, then extended it to 14 maps for his 1546 edition. In 1561, a new set of 24 maps based on the same style was published by the Baltic printer Henri Pierre, with Greek and Latin text in 2 columns. This volume is illustrated with an ARMILLA SPHERE, a woodcut showing Proclus teaching and the famous 24 GRAVE MAPS on wood (Map of the World, Ireland, Spain, Majorca, France, England, Germany, Scandinavia, Italy, Sicily, Greece, Iceland, The Holy Land, Cyprus, India, Java, India, Sumatra (Taproba), South Africa, Madeira, North Africa, Malta, Egypt, Cuba). The heart-shaped world map is a version with North and South America completely redrawn; it is surrounded by a border with stars, clouds and wind heads. Missing the general title and the first 6 pages (Dedication and abridged biographies of the authors), the copy is in fine condition in its contemporary stamped binding (USTC, 686898).
