LINSCHOTEN, Jan Huyghen van - Navigatio ac Itinerarium ... in Orientalem sive Lusitanorum Indiam [part 2: Descriptio totius Guineae tractatus]. Hagae-Comitis Albrecht Hendrickz, for the author and Cornelius Nicolaius / Aeg. Elsevier 1599 Ref. Shirley World 192; Adams L-735; Brunet III, 1091; Howgego L131; Sabin 41366; New Hollstein Van Doetecum IV, 927-984; Willems 950; Tiele 683+684; cat. NHSM p. 171. As well as including important travel accounts taken from contemporary Portuguese, Dutch, and Spanish sources, it is the first work to include precise sailing instructions for the Indies, and also includes an account of America as well as secrets about Portuguese sea routes to the east and about how their territories were governed; it was also of special value for its description of spice trees and spice growing areas. About the world map: This double-hemispheric map is notable for several reasons. As Shirley notes, "there are differences affecting the northern seas, and the pictorial scenes forming the outer border have been regrouped with even greater stylistic effect." It is also the second-known map to depict Korea as a peninsula. Finally, the watermark, that of crossed arrows 90mm in length, is different to the other watermarks found on the other van Langren and van Doetecum maps and plates in the book (bunch of grapes terminating in initials I.S.) About the author: Linschoten, a Dutchman born in Delft, was in Goa between 1583 and 1589, and with Willem Barentsz on his second voyage to the Kara Sea in 1594-1595. These experiences were recorded in the present work, which was first published in Dutch, and contains the most comprehensive account of the East and West Indies available at the end of the 16th century. 2 parts in 1 vol. in-folio (310 x 200 mm), viii, 124, 45, [3] pp. Title to each part with large ship-vignette, full-page engraved illustration of dedicatee's arms, full-page engraved PORTRAIT of the author with four small inset maps at corners, 7 folding engraved maps (WORLD MAP by Arnold and Hendrik van Langren after Jan Baptist Vrients; East Coast of Africa; Coast around Indian Ocean; Coasts of China, Sumatra & Java; West Coast of Africa; ARCTIC OCEAN; Central & South American Coasts), 31 plates (costumes and botanical subjects), 5 folding plates (City of Goa, Market of Goa, two of Sancta Helena, City of Angra). The plates are signed by Baptista van Doetecum and Jan van Doetecum the younger, others by Arnold Florensz. van Langren, and Hendrik Florensz. van Langren, after Willem Barents, A.F. van Langren and Linschoten. First Latin edition and the first WITH THE SUPERB BARENTS MAP of the Arctic Ocean. Condition: title remargined, front free endpaper with large repaired chip, first few leaves creased at lower corner, one or two plates crumpled at edges, a few tiny holes at creasefolds but without any major loss, some browning and waterstaining, mainly marginal but with occasional encroachment on plates. First published in Dutch in 1618 as "Journal ofte beschryvinghe van de wonderlicke reyse.... Hoe hy bezuyden de Strate van Magellanes een nieuwe Passagie ontdekt, en voort den gheelen Aerd-kloot omgheselt". Schouten's voyage was one of the great early voyages of discovery and only the third circumnavigation. Undertaken in 1615 and lasting until 1617, this important expedition succeeded in its primary objective which was to find an alternative route to the rich sources of wealth in the Pacific. Third French translation of Schouten's popular account of his circumnavigation with Jacob Le Maire in search of the unknown southern continent. Among the expedition's cartographic contributions were the discovery of a new strait of Tierra del Fuego, named after Le Maire, and charting parts of the coastline of New Guinea. This Paris edition follows the French translation printed at Amsterdam the same year, but "with alterations and improvements in the text" (Sabin) and the plates in slightly smaller versions. Schouten's landmark voyage was only the third circumnavigation, 'during which Cape Horn [named after Schouten's hometown of Hoorn] was discovered and rounded for the first time' (Hill) According to Cox, this circumnavigation and first passage through the Strait of Le Maire was 'one of the most remarkable voyages ever undertaken, [which] contributed much to the science of cartography...the numerous editions of the voyage attest its popularity, indicating how much the new passage into the South Seas was appreciated which would open a route to lands thought to lie south of those monopolized by the Dutch East India Company." 8vo, [xiv], 232 pp, ill. with 8 folding engraved plates: double-hemisphere map with portraits of Magellan, Schouten, and others, 3 sea charts, and 4 views (without the first blank leaf as usual, third map just shaved at lower edge, map of New Guinea slightly weak at fold, section of title fore-edge replaced, occasional tiny marginal wormtrack, slightly browned). Souple vellum binding, reusing old vellum, title in ink on spine

PIERRE ALECHINSKY (Brussels, 1927). "Iran & Caspian Sea", 1980-1990. Acrylic on paper adhered to canvas. Signed, dated and titled on the back. Signed on stretcher frame. Attached certificate issued and signed by the artist. Measurements: 108 x 146 cm; 124 x 162 cm (frame). Using as a base a geographical map centered on the area of Iran and the Caspian Sea, Alechinsky unfolds his imaginary and intervenes in it in a simplified way, delimiting certain zones and figuratively "flooding" others. This work belongs to his "marginal observations" series, small vignettes in the margins of the painting that will become a cardinal feature of his production. The series can be understood by taking into account that it comes from a vocabulary related to printing. "Engravers who had to draw with burin or drypoint on a copper plate tested their tool on the margin of the plate; by letting themselves go, they often sketched a small image. For my part, this sometimes explains what is at the center of the work, other times it accompanies it, it takes on more importance...", explains the artist himself. He continues, "The artist is not aware of it at the time, but by framing the central figure with other smaller drawings, he establishes an authentic pictorial device that assumes the limit of the painting and protects it, attracts our gaze and retains it". A lithographer, painter and theorist, Pierre Alechinsky trained at the École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture et des Arts Décoratifs de la Cambre in Brussels, showing both gifts and interest in illustration and typography. In 1945 he discovered the work of Michaux, Dubuffet and the surrealists, at which time he also became friends with the art critic Jacques Putman. He began painting in 1947, beginning a career that would mix certain characteristics of Expressionism with others of Surrealism, both accompanied by a very personal style. In the late 1940s he met the poet Christian Dotremont, one of the founding members of the CoBrA group (an acronym for Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam), and Alechinsky joined the group in 1949. Along with Alechinsky, the group included Karel Appel, Christian Dotremont and Asger Jorn, among others. He also participated in the group's first international exhibition in Amsterdam and collaborated on canvases with Karel Appel and other members. After the dissolution of CoBrA, Alechinsky moved to Paris, where he experimented with printmaking at the popular Atelier 17. There he met Giacometti, Bram van Velde and Victor Brauner. In 1954 he had his first solo exhibition at the Nina Dausset Gallery in Paris, where he was able to meet the painter Walasse Ting, who was to exert an important influence on him. In 1956 he made "Central Park", an acrylic painting that included "marginal observations", leitmotif in much of his production. The first retrospective of his work took place in 1969, at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. In 1966, André Breton chose this piece for the international exhibition of the surrealist movement. His work has been exhibited in Amsterdam, London, the Venice Biennale, New York, etc., and is kept in important private collections and institutions such as the Marion Lefebre Collection in Los Angeles, the Galerie Leolong in Paris, the Museo Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, the MoMA, etc.
