With his extravagant furniture creations and refined designs from the late 19th to the early 20th century, Carlo Bugatti (1856-1940) created a completely independent and unmistakable artistic style in which he freely combined allusions to various cultures, such as a distinctive Moorish vocabulary of forms, with the delicate, ornamental lines of Art Nouveau. Bugatti presented the above chair model for the first time in 1902 at the Esposizione Internazionale d'Arte Decorativa Moderna in Turin together with a ladies' desk. The furniture, completely covered in parchment, concealed the design details and heralded a new stylistic high point in his work. A version of this piece of furniture is in the collection of Alain Lesieutre, Paris.
