Captain Chair; England, c. 1950. Oak wood, leather and iron. Swivel chair. Measurements: 89 x 59 x 44 cm. Swivel chair made of oak wood with leather seat. The Captain Chairs are so called because the first versions of these armchairs were used on board ships to seat high ranking officers. These armchairs date back to the 19th century and used to be made of wood.

Art Nouveau armchair, first half of the twentieth century. Carved and fretworked oak wood. Measurements: 91 x 62,5 x 46 cm. Armchair made of carved oak wood that presents a design of fluid lines, although the volume of the carving provides robustness to the design. The piece is supported by four legs with a curved and concave profile, which adds lightness to the structure. The carving that adorns the backrest has a design of organic lines inspired by nature, very typical of Art Nouveau aesthetics. The flat seat gives way to the armrests that also have a sinuous profile that adapts fluidly to the backrest.

Pair of armchairs; Glasgow School, c. 1920. Beech wood and mother of pearl. Measurements: 75.5 x 54.5 x 40.5 cm. Pair of armchairs with the same design and aesthetic finish. Each of the chairs is supported on three legs, joined by wooden crossbeams. These support a seat with a triangular perimeter to which is attached a semicircular backrest that breaks with the geometric rigidity. The armchairs are highly reminiscent of some of the works of Ernest Archibald Taylor (1874 - , 1951), better known as E A Taylor, was a Scottish artist, oil painter, watercolorist and engraver, and designer of furniture, interiors and stained glass. He moved to Salford, where he designed for George Wragge Ltd, producing numerous stained glass designs, including domestic works for the Scottish engineer Sir William Arrol at Seafield House in Ayr. Between 1911 and 1914, Taylor lived in Paris, where they established an art school, the Shearling Atelier.

Armchair Retour d'Égypte Armrests supported by two sphinxes Four claw feet Ca. 1800/10 Finest Empire marquetry Hardwood Silk cover Height 97 cm, width 63 cm, depth 70 cm Seat height 43 cm Provenance: Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall, Hainfeld Castle near Feldbach (leading Oriental researcher and top freemason) This armchair has an unusual provenance: it comes from the estate of Baron Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall (Graz 1774 - 1856 Vienna). Hammer-Purgstall was an Austrian Orientalist and pioneer in his field. From 1799 he travelled to Constantinople, then to the Levant, and subsequently to Egypt in connection with Napoleon's Egypt expedition. When Napoleon Bonaparte started his campaign to Egypt (1798-1801), his army was accompanied by numerous explorers who published their research in 1802 as "La description de l'Égypte", from which the fashion for the "Retour d'Égpyte" developed. This style was extremely popular at the beginning of the 19th century, but is only found in a limited period of time, which is reflected in the rarity of the objects preserved today. This armchair features two carved sphinxes with a nemes headscarf characteristic of pharaohs and typical claw feet. The armchair comes from the Renaissance castle of Hainfeld near Feldbach, the largest moated castle in Styria and from 1835 the summer residence of Hammer-Purgstall, who inherited the castle from Jane Anne Purgstall and made it a landmark of his "native Orient" by, among other things, building the largest secular library in Styria within.
