. Paris, Techener, 1892. Bound with: PICHON (Jérôme) and VICAIRE (Georges): Le Manuscrit de la Bibliothèque vaticane, supplément au Viandier de Taillevent. One volume. 15 by 23 cm. Both volumes continuously paginated. Frontispiece-(8)-LXVIII-300 pages. 10 hors-texte plates with frontispiece (complete). Full modern anthracite morocco, 5-rib spine, covers preserved. Binding signed D'HERVE. Very good condition. The covers are preserved, stained and restored. Two leaves with foxing, one leaf with a small tear restored, the title page of the supplement slightly browned. A bookplate torn from the title page of the first work. Despite these defects, a good copy. Limited edition of 350 copies. Ours is one of 300 on Marais vellum (N°230). Enriched with a signed autograph letter from Georges VICAIRE to his friend J. B. PONCET. Le Viandier is a French recipe book from the late Middle Ages (late 14th century), associated with the name of Guillaume Tirel, known as Taillevent, master chef to the French kings Charles V and Charles VI. The oldest known manuscript, that of Sion, from the 13th century, proves that it actually predates him. It is a reworking of an even earlier work on the "art of the violin maker". In the middle of the 16th century, the viandier was still a tradesman, involved in running and supplying a food store, selling and supplying often wholesale, sometimes retail, to his customers and buying from a collection network, managing a precious stock of consumable foodstuffs. He may be self-employed, or an employee of a company for whom he is responsible. The word "meat" is used in the ancient sense of the classical Latin word, vivenda, meaning food, various kinds of nourishment, provisions for the mouth, food in general. (Wikipedia)

This model, produced for only 4 years until 1973, is certainly the most sculptural cuff Piaget imagined in the 1970s. THEATRE - François-Joseph TALMA (1763-1826, actor, Napoleon's favorite comedian and friend) / Exceptional document: these are corrections in his own hand to the notice preceding his "Quelques réflexions sur Le Kain et sur l'Art théâtral" for the 1825 Crapelet edition in Paris - These reflections appeared on the occasion of the republication of Le Kain's "Mémoires" (Henri Le Kain, 1729-1778, was the most revered Comédie Française actor of the 18th century, his memoirs were published by his son Bernardin Le Kain in 1801, from his papers) - Talma in 1825 was at the height of his popularity and his Art, his fame surpassing Le Kain's, and in fact Talma took advantage of this republication, to express his considerations on the theatrical art / The MANUSCRIT shown is that of the notice preceding Talma's reflections, 2 p in-folio, written by a secretary (calligraphic handwriting) and with Talma's autograph corrections (in darker ink) - the 1856 reprint of this text confirms in the preamble that the notice begins "I have no pretension of being a writer" and ends "I hope the reader will see in this confidence neither an excess of vanity nor a false modesty" is well in line with Talma's corrections, it is also stated that the manuscript of the text itself of these reflections is in the Bibliothèque de la Comédie française (without the notice) / EXPLANATION: this manuscript comes from the archives of Louis-Benoit PICARD (1769-1828, actor, playwright and company director), and was kept with 4 other documents: 1°) An autograph letter (1 p in-8, unsigned) addressed to Picard, asking him to write the notice: "Monsieur Picard, who does novels so well and notices so well, does he need me to send him some notes on the plan I wanted to follow and the works I wished to consult? I'm sending him these indications as he wishes. I'd be delighted if they could save him some trouble; there is no student in painting who has not been glorious in grinding the colors of a great master" - 2°) The previously announced plan, which details in 8 points what needs to be said about Le Kain, including an anecdote about his beginnings (2 p in-8) - 3°) A handwritten note on La Kain, written by the secretary (calligraphy) includes bibliographical information and details of an appointment with Talma - 4°) a printout of an "extrait d'une lettre particulière" from June 1780 concerning Le Kain (4 p in-8) / CONCLUSION: the possible interpretation of these documents is that Bernardin LE KAIN Fils is the author of the letter and notes to PICARD (this publication was above all a republication of Le Kain's Mémoires), the printout comes from Le Kain's archives, and the notice was written by PICARD, which explains its presence in his archives / NB: this notice is very interesting because of the erasures and especially the strong passage at the end which was deleted in the printed notice.

Milestone of Roman Carthography. NOLLI. Nuova pianta di Roma data in luce da Giambattista Nolli l'anno M DCC XLVIII. - Imperial Folio. 478x365 mm. 19th century quarter calf binding, gilt title and rules on spine, marbled insidecovers. The work is entirely engraved on copper so composed: a sheet with the title, "La topografia di Roma" on double page, "Urbis Ichonographia a Leonardo Bufalino" on double page; a sheet with "Avviso al Lettore," 4 sheets with "Indice de Numeri della Pianta," 12 plates on double page with cartographic sections "La nuova topografia di Roma," 4 sheets with "Indice alfabetico della Pianta." After the sheet of "Notice to the Reader," the sheets are numbered 1-32: Index (pp. 1-4), 12 cartographic sections on double pages (pp. 5-28), index on single page (pp. 29-32).After the sheet with the title is added a plate in two sheets of 350x335 and 350x255 mm: "Panorama de Rome, pris du clocher du Capitole." In the first the circular view of Rome seen from the bell tower of the Senatorial Palace on the Capitoline Hill, with 191 buildings, in the second the legend with 187 toponyms; copper engraving, laid paper, trace of watermark. On the free end-paper the ex-libris "Comte Fernand de Rességuier". Some leaves shorter. Defects on the binding, marginal foxing internally and some traces of humidity, overall a good copy. Rare first edition. Giovanni Battista Nolli's "Nuova pianta di Roma," created between 1736 and 1748, is considered a milestone in the art and science of cartography for the accuracy with which it records the dense urban fabric of Rome at the height of its eighteenth-century beauty: streets, squares, public spaces, villas, vineyards, monasteries and ancient ruins. In short, almost eight square miles of land exquisitely engraved on twelve copper plates and with the indexing of 1320 sites. The work was commissioned by Pope Benedict XIV to survey Rome and help to create the demarcations of the fourteen (14) traditional districts of Rome. It is by far the most accurate description of Rome produced up to that time, at a time when the architectural achievements of the papacy were in full development. Nolli's map reflects Bufalini's 1551 map, however Nolli made a number of important innovations. First, Nolli reorients the city from east (as was conventional at the time) to magnetic north, reflecting the fact that Nolli relies on the compass to orient himself in the city's topography. Second, Nolli represents closed public spaces such as the colonnades of St. Peter's Square and the Pantheon as open civic spaces. Finally, the map represented a significant improvement in terms of accuracy, even detecting the asymmetry of the Spanish Square. The map was used in government planning of the city of Rome until the 1970s; it was used as a base map for all Roman cartography and planning up to that date. This copy contains in addition to Nolli's work: "The topography of Rome" on a double page engraved by Nolli in 1748; "Urbis Ichnographiam a Leonardo Bufalino," the map of ancient Rome by Leonardo Bufalini, originally engraved in 1551, reworked and reduced by G.B. Nolli in 1748; "Panorama de Rome, pris du Clocher du Capitole," copper engraving by an anonymous artist from around 1750. An unusual circular panoramic view of Rome seen from the bell tower of the Palazzo Senatorio on the Capitoline Hill. 191 buildings from across Rome are depicted as they would be seen from the bell tower, including parts of the Palazzo Senatorio and the Piazza del Campidoglio, which are the largest illustrations on the right side of the circle. Basilicas, cathedrals and churches appear alongside ancient ruins, including the Colosseum (143), Trajan's Column (99), St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican. The legend of the toponyms was cut out and glued onto another sheet and contains 187 toponyms.Luigi Ficacci 22, John Wilton-Ely 1007 (1095-5), Millard Architectural Collection, Italian and Spanish Books, p. 234-239.For the 'Panorama': this very rare view was created by an unknown artist and published around 1750, probably for travelers on the "Grand Tour". Three copies in OCLC: Bibliothèque nationale de France, Utrecht University and Bayerische Staatsbibliothek. A specimen also in the Library of Congress.

[Macon] [manuscript] LAPLATTE (Abbé François) : Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire sacrée et profane de Macon - Turpe est Atheniensem preregrinum esse - 1766. One volume. 19 by 25.5 cm. (12)-564 pages, followed by a hundred blank leaves. Contemporary boards bound in marbled paper. Handwritten text on bluish paper, very legible, with a few erasures, and additional notes in the margins. In perfect condition. Attached is a handwritten letter addressed to Abbé LAPLATTE, containing a clarification of a scholarly note on the land of Leyne in 1363. Letter addressed to Monsieur La Platte, former curé de l'hesne, near Saint-Pierre church in Mâcon. A manuscript of the same work is in the Bibliothèque municipale de MACON, and was transcribed in the Hors-série N°2 of Etudes Mâconnaises in September 2017. But the manuscript we present is not an identical copy of the transcribed one. We can assume that it is a first version of the text, later taken up and expanded. As a clue, the manuscript held by the town of MACON is dated 1768, ours 1766. Our manuscript stops at around 1702, with a line at the bottom of the page closing it off, for the elements recounted there, whereas the transcribed manuscript goes right up to the beginning of the Revolution. In the preface, our copy cites Gregory of Tours and the Livre enchainé from the archives of Saint-Vincent. These two sources are ignored by the Macon manuscript, which adds Guillaume Paradin. Our copy is often less detailed than the transcribed text, and this seems to confirm the hypothesis of a first version of the text. Here's an example: "One of the parish priests of the diocese who best fulfilled the pious views of Mr. Leveque was Mr. de Boisfranc parish priest of Bussières: see brochure." says our copy (page 456) "One of the parish priests who best fulfilled the holy views of the bishop was Monsieur de Boisfranc, parish priest of Bussières, who, having been a Calvinist himself, knew better the errors of the party. He blessed God for enlightening his eyes, generously abjured his errors and, like another Paul, sought to defend the truths he had so shamefully opposed. He entered the clergy. His talents were known, and Bussières having been entrusted to him, he brought a large number of Calvinists back into the fold of the church" is the version in the 1768 manuscript (page 196 of his transcription). The text then continues with a paragraph, identical in both manuscripts. Attached is Hors-Série N°2 of Etudes Mâconnaises, in which Abbé LAPLATTE's 1768 copy has been transcribed. A unique and exceptional document.
