DELACROIX (Eugène) & GOETHE. Faust. Tragedy by M. de Goethe, translated into French by M. Albert Stapfer. Paris, Motte et Sautelet, 1828. In-folio of [2] ff., IV-148 pp. Dim. ff. 41.6 x 27.5 cm. Half blond calf, ornate smooth spine, dark brown title page (later binding). Portrait of the author and 17 engraved illustrations by DELACROIX. All plates bear the Motte address, characteristic of the first printing according to Delteil, 57-74. (Carteret III, 270 "a remarkable work typical of the Romantic period, a masterly illustration by the great Delacroix, who is fortunately increasingly esteemed by tasteful bibliophiles"; Vicaire III, 1013). The first edition of the beautiful illustrations drawn by Delacroix and lithographed by Motte; the first literary text illustrated by lithography (discovered by Senefelder in 1796 and introduced in France from 1818), this fine publication is considered the first modern book by a painter. Goethe himself was a particular admirer of Delacroix's genius, as demonstrated in his Faust: "Faust is a work that goes from heaven to earth, from the possible to the impossible, from coarseness to delicacy; all the antitheses that the play of a daring imagination can create are brought together in it, so M. Delacroix felt there as if at home and in his family [...] It must be admitted that this M. Delacroix is a great talent. Delacroix is a great talent who found his true nourishment in Faust [...] And if I have to agree that M. Delacroix has surpassed the pictures I had painted of the scenes written by myself, all the more reason will readers find these compositions full of life, and going far beyond the images they had created for themselves [...]" (Interviews with Eckermann). Unwashed copy, brown spots. A fine copy on Hollande paper containing the lithographs on wove paper.

[CIRIER (Nicolas)]. L'Apprentif Administrateur, a picturesque (!), literary-typographical-bureaucratic pamphlet that may (nam tua res agitur paries cùm proximus ardet) be of interest to anyone employed, employable, exemployée. By someone in the latter category. Paris, Chez l'auteur, 1840. In-8 (227 x 144 mm) of [1] f. for the Mémoire à l'appui d'une pétition, IV pp. for the Dédiquasse, 72 pp, (2) ff. for I [between pages 18 and 19], (1) f., 17 pp. and 1 folded lithographed portrait for III [between pages 24 and 25], 1 large folded lithographed table. Paperback in printed green paper cover with remnants of red wax stamp and handwritten bill laminated to first board, several small pieces of blank paper laminated to second board to mask engraved drawings in corners. First edition of 100 copies (of which less than ten have survived) of this incredible publication by Nicolas Cirier (1792-1869), proofreader and protector at the Imprimerie Royale from 1826 to 1836, when he resigned following a refusal of promotion. "This pamphlet, "bariolé d'observations" (Cirier dixit), that is to say, lithographic vignettes pasted on, woodcuts and copper engravings, a jumble of recriminations and considerations on the author's craft, interests us above all for the typographic delirium employed, for what Cirier called his horror vacui [...] The most extravagant of Cirier's productions is also the rarest: as soon as it was published, its author announced that he was going to destroy all but "five or six" copies. Little more is known of it. (Antoine Coron). According to Raymond Queneau (who worked to bring Cirier out of oblivion): "No literary madman has ever made such profound use of the resources of printing, nor so conscious an expression of his delirium." (in Bâtons, chiffres et lettres.) Copy enriched with 19 additional cut and pasted lithographs (not including the fold-out portrait and table) and 13 pasted printed texts, one flyleaf printed on pink paper before p. 5 (with the continuation of the text of the page also printed on pink paper pasted at the bottom of page 5). Cover very worn, missing at lower corner of first cover, tears with small missing pieces at upper corner of first cover (with small piece of paper laminated on verso, for reinforcement?), major missing piece on second cover. Rousseurs. (Des livres rares depuis l'invention de l'imprimerie, BnF, 1998, no. 241: notice by Antoine Coron; Blavier, Les Fous littéraires, 2000, pp. 595-604).

[HELVÉTIUS (Claude Adrien)]. De l'Esprit. Paris, Durand, 1758. In-4 of (1) ff. xxii-643-(1) pp. red morocco, ornate ribbed spine, green mar. title page, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, gilt edges (period binding). Rubbed and scratched, binding re-tinted and restored. Paper slightly browned in places, scattered foxing, pink stain in margin of first pages. Without the portrait of Peter II, King of Portugal, which is sometimes added to some copies. First edition. Hardback copy. "First edition of this famous work, censured by the Sorbonne as containing 'all the poisons scattered in the various modern books', i.e. contemporary [...] The work, dedicated to the royal family, was rejected by the latter, and on August 10, a few days after publication, the privilege, given on May 12, was revoked. In spite of the Lettre au révérend père... [Berthier ou Pleix] which constitutes an apology and a retraction, followed by another more explicit retraction, the book was censured by the clergy [...] Helvétius then submitted a third to Joly de Fleury, avocat général, on January 22, 1759; on the 31st appeared the letter from the Pope, and on April 9 the censure from the Faculté de Théologie. Fleury had already issued his requisitions on January 23, while sparing the author himself, and on February 6, 1759, the Parlement handed down its judgment; the book was burned on the 10th. Helvetius resigned as maître d'hôtel dela rine; the censor resigned. Helvetius made these retractions out of friendship for his censor Texier, who had had a lot of trouble with him. This retraction is found attached to some copies. These copies feature Cartons on pages 1-16, 35-38, 59-62, 67-70, 75-78, 139-142, 145-54, 159-160, 169-176, 187-190, 227-230, 233-234, 239-240, 459-462, 545-550, 603-606. These corrections, considerable at the time, no longer seem so moving; time and events have passed. Helvetius had copies printed for his friends. [...]" (Tchemerzine VI 188-189). "One cannot see without indignation that one persecutes with this continuous relentlessness a book that this persecution alone can make dangerous by making the reader search for the hidden venom that one supposes in it", Voltaire, Letter to Thieriot, February 7, 1759. Corr. D8086. "No one has the right over the air I breathe, nor over the noblest function of my mind, that of judging for myself." Claude Adrien Helvétius (1715-1771). Early, carefully written handwritten notes (on some boards).
