LELLA AND MASSIMO VIGNELLI FOR POLTRONOVA: A THREE-SEATER SARATOGA SOFA, 20TH CENTURY - LELLA AND MASSIMO VIGNELLI FOR POLTRONOVA: A THREE-SEATER SARATOGA SOFA, 20TH CENTURY LELLA AND MASSIMO VIGNELLI FOR POLTRONOVA: A THREE-SEATER SARATOGA SOFA, 20TH CENTURY designed by the Italian designer couple Lella and Massimo Vignelli. Produced by Poltronova of Florence, the sofa is a design classic with a black and red combination for the frame and cushions respectively. Although the original cushions show some signs of distress, they are still supple and have no rips and tears, ready to be enjoyed by the new owner for many years still. The Vignellis are well known for their clear designs and this piece is completely free of decorative details. All attention goes to the essential form and material in their design. Named the “Saratoga“, it is one of the first examples of modular and modern living in the 20th century. In the design as words: "We have designed this sofa because we really needed a sofa. And the sofa we wanted was one with an architectural character rather than a soft smooth object. A sofa that could be set out in the middle of the room. We didn't want it to be pushed up against the walls; we wanted it to move around as needed.” The series is composed of armchairs and sofas with two, three, or four seats. The rigid structure, made by assembling four parts of equal thickness with rounded edges contains slightly protruding seat cushions. The desired purity of the silhouette is accentuated by the precious finishes: glossy polyester lacquer for the chassis, similar to that of a piano, and fine leather for the soft cushions resembling the upholstery in luxury automobiles. The essential form combined with the precision of the design and the refinement of the finishes makes this project by Lella and Massimo Vignelli timeless. From some angles it looks as though the sofa is hovering above the ground. A design that is futuristic, modern and classic all at the same time. A truly remarkable piece of furniture which is useful, stylish and looks fantastic in a modern or mid-century design setting. Poltronova is an Italian company that operates in the design and furniture sector based in Florence. Founded in 1957 in Agliana, its best known products, some also exhibited at the moment in New York, include the Joe armchair, the Superonda Poltronova modular sofa, the Ultrafragola mirror, and the Sgarsul rocking chair. In Good Condition - Some wear and tear to the leather consummate with age. However no rips or tears to the leather, good rich colour. Some surface scratches to the lacquered wood, some cracking to the lacquer on the back left hand side to the rear of the sofa. One or two rungs missing beneath the cushions but bears no adverse effects whatsoever to the usability of the sofa. Please refer to photographs. ROMEO REGA FOR METALARTE (ATTR. TO.): A METAMORPHIC GAMES TABLE / DINING TABLE, C. 1980 - ROMEO REGA FOR METALARTE (ATTR. TO.): A METAMORPHIC GAMES TABLE / DINING TABLE, C. 1980 ROMEO REGA FOR METALARTE (ATTR. TO.): A METAMORPHIC GAMES TABLE / DINING TABLE, C. 1980 attributed to the esteemed Romeo Rega for Metalarte, crafted in Italy circa 1980. This exquisite piece showcases a distinguished brass and polished chrome frame, exemplifying the sleek and sophisticated design elements that defined Rega's iconic contributions to Italian craftsmanship during this era. Meticulously designed, this versatile table seamlessly transitions between a stylish games table and an elegant dining surface, making it an ideal centrepiece for spaces that prioritise both entertainment and dining experiences. The striking combination of brass and polished chrome lends a touch of opulence to the table's frame, enhancing its visual appeal and reflecting the luxurious aesthetic characteristic of Rega's renowned creations. Elevate your interior with this wonderful item of mid century design which fuses Italian artistry and functional design, that encapsulating the spirit of 1980s sophistication. Born in 1904, Italian designer Romeo Rega is one of several 1970s-era designers that are associated with a combination of modernism and glamour in their furniture creations. Rega epitomises this style, his brand is said to have been launched on the December 31st, 1969, producing lighting, chairs, tables, and display cabinets identified by his double “R” logo, ceasing production in 1981. Though little is known of his personal or professional life, Rega’s legacy has not been lost, with the arrival of his designs to vintage and collector’s auctions. Rega’s furniture is characterised by geometric shapes and reduced forms. His designs are almost always gilded, chromed, or brass-plated, which adds the allure and elegance that Rega is known for, to his clean-lined modernist pieces. Although there is little verifiable information, some sources believe that Rega worked with designer-to-the-stars Willy Rizzo and prolific designer Gabriella Crespi, as all three designers espouse very similar aesthetics. With many entertainment-focused pieces, such as coffee tables with display space and liquor cabinets, occasional tables, etageres, and decorative table lamps, Rega’s work is popular among lovers of Hollywood Regency and 1970s design. Metalarte is a family business with almost a century of history that was born as a metalwork workshop, founded by Antonio Riera Clariana in 1932 under the name of Metall Arts. At the beginning of the 1940s, it began designing and manufacturing its own lamp models but it was not until the end of the 1950s that it began to define the modern and innovative character for which the firm is known today. In very good vintage condition. Some very minor damage to the wood veneer on one side and some very minor damage to the green baize to the other. Please refer to photographs. Known for blending industrial design with art, the tubular structure of the table is emblematic of Rinaldi’s work. Dozens of chromed tubes scrunched together to form a solid structure, topped with thick circular glass. A masterpiece of mid century industrial design perfect for any home or office. About the designer: Gastone Rinaldi (1920-2016) is an Italian designer. In 1916, his father, Mario Rinaldi, founded RIMA, a company that produced metal furniture. In 1948, Gastone Rinaldi and his brother replaced their father within the company. He met Gio Ponti in 1950 and, with his help, designed the chairs (DU10 and DU11) for the hospital section of the IXth Triennale in Milan. On this occasion he also presents the chair with the DU9 rocking back. During this period, the Domus magazine regularly publishes its achievements. He participated in the XXX Fiera Campionaria, in 1952, in the section “Art and Industrial Aesthetics” whose curators were among others Alberto Rosselli, Ettore Sottsass and Marco Zanuso. In 1954, he received the Compasso d’Oro for the DU30 chair. He participated with Ponti, Parisi, De Carli and Gardella, in the American adventure of Altamira, one of the first foreign companies to call on Italian designers. He designs, with Carlo Mollino, the chairs for the Molinette hospital in Turin. In 1957, the DU41 armchair won the silver medal at the XIth Triennale in Milan. Over the years, however, relations within RIMA would become complicated and in 1974 Gastone Rinaldi founded the company Thema. In 1978, he obtained a mention at the Compasso d’Oro for the Arianna armchair and, in 1981, a second for the Daphné folding chair, his last masterpiece. La Thema will close in 1989. "AMANTA" A FOUR PIECE MODULAR SOFA BY MARIO BELLINI FOR C&B ITALIA c.1970 - "AMANTA" A FOUR PIECE MODULAR SOFA BY MARIO BELLINI FOR C&B ITALIA c.1970 "AMANTA" A FOUR PIECE MODULAR SOFA BY MARIO BELLINI FOR C&B ITALIA c.1970 A early 1970s C&B Italia “Amanta” modular or sectional four piece sofa designed by Mario Bellini in 1966. Produced in the early 1970s by C&B Italia (known as B&B Italia today). The four chairs are made from an enamelled Fiberlite structure raised from the ground on four round hard black rubber feet. Each chair has three separate cushions. The removable foam block base cushion is secured in place with a small white toggle which slots into the base which stops it from sliding. The back and upper base cushion are extremely comfortable with three feature buttons on each. The fibreglass shells are in good order with no chips. The original black leather shows some minor wear but is in exceptional condition considering its age. By virtue of the label, it is possible to ascertain that this example predates 1973 when C&B Italia becomes B&B Italia following the acquisition of Cassina’s shares by Busnelli. A wonderful mid century set, rare to find in such good original condition. In Great Condition - Very good vintage condition, some light staining to the seating but not obvious, couple of the plastic pads missing from the bottom of the ball feet, minor scratches to the white shells but structurally perfect. Please refer to photographs. Height: 70cm Seat Height: 38cm Width: 80cm Depth: 80cm
