What better way to depict the fluidity of nature than in the shimmer of molded pressed glass? We owe this idea to René Lalique, whose rare suite of five Saint Nabor sconces (1928) testifies to the breadth of his creativity. The man who had been the most brilliant jeweller of his generation around 1900, and who was constantly on the lookout for artistic renewal, began large-scale production of moulded pressed glass in 1921. Quality production for the general public rubbed shoulders with luxury production for prestigious commissions such as the Paquebot Normandy. Nature, which took the form of an incessant undulation in his jewellery creations around 1900, is here the object of extreme simplification through a play on smooth and amati, whose fine branches engraved with foliage are terminated by abats jours with barely suggested petals. A striking modernity in keeping with the rarity of this model, reinforced by the number of sconces in this suite.
