A silver kettle bearing the von Pfeffel family motto and its preparatory drawing. From the Maison Odiot collections. The preparatory drawing and the silver model show the variety of designs offered by the Maison Odiot. While the drawing envisages a kettle with extravagant ornamentation, the final model is more sober, with large gadroons found on other models made between 1825 and 1838 (see, for example, Jean-Marie Pinçon and Olivier Gaube du Gers, op.cit., for a vegetable dish reproduced on p. 178). Our silver example was made for the Bavarian von Pfeffel family, whose motto is embossed on the belly. In the 19th century, Christian Hubert Pfeffel (1765-1834) was elevated to the rank of Freiherr (Baron). In 1836, his son Carl Maximilian (1811-1890) married Karoline von Rothenbourg (1805-1872), the natural daughter of Prince Paul-Charles of Württemberg (1785-1852). The drawing is referenced in the Odiot archives under number 40: "Lead pencil line drawing / 15-cup kettle / Three-post stove on runners / Shells linked by light garlands of / flowers - Body inverted form, decorated with / contoured lambrequins each bearing a / flower motif. Rocaille spout decorated with flowers / and water leaves, plain handle with opposite crossettes / Flower seed ".
