COLT «Pocket», modèle 1849 - * Two black powder capsule percussion revolvers, presented in a box to form a pair, luxury models. Single-action, five-chamber barrels, engraved with a stagecoach attack scene. Octagonal barrels with wide rifling. Cal. 8 mm (or .31). Mouths engraved with a frieze of stylized leaves. Steel frames engraved with foliage. Gilded bridges and stock mounts, decorated en suite. Polished ivory (Elephantidae spp I/A) crossbars. N° 108033 or 108741; each well numbered. Year of production: 1855 [dating done via the Colt Archives online site based on serial numbers]. Unit gross weight: 715 or 709 g. Barrel length: 10.1 cm - Overall length: 22.3 or 22.5 cm. One inside barrel clean, the other with a trace of deposit or small ring-shaped corrosion in the first third. Some wear, notably to the gilding, decorations and signatures on the barrels and to one of the signatures on the top of a barrel; a few scratches and stains; sparse oxidation and some surface pitting, notably under one barrel; an old chip to a stock plate. In a rectangular mahogany case, with reinforcing angles and varnished brass cartridge (blank), with accessories, including the silver-plated steel bullet mold, signed Colts Patent, some attachments, including the blackened wood and ivory powder flask (Elephantidae spp I/A) (gross weight: 33.5 g. - 12.2 x 2.3 cm; without cap) and the cylindrical metal case, marked Dixon & son. Case dimensions: 6.6 x 35.2 x 22.3 cm. Without key; scratches, small bumps and stains; wear to some accessories. Category D. BERTHIER, Alexandre, Prince de Wagram (1753-1815). Relation de la bataille de Marengo gagnée le 25 prairial an 8, par Napoléon Bonaparte, Premier Consul, commandant en personne l'armée française de réserve, sur les Autrichiens aux ordres du lieutenant-général Mélas. Written by General Alexandre Berthier, Minister of War, commanding under the immediate orders of the First Consul, and accompanied by indicative plans of the various troop movements, geometrically surveyed by the geographic engineers of the Dépôt général de la guerre.... Paris, Imprimerie Impériale. 1806. Large in-4° (290 X 235 mm), (faux-titre, and title-frontispice engraved by Niquet after Vernet), 40 pages. One folding table "Situation de l'Armée de réserve" (500 X 400 mm), 5 folding watercolor maps mounted on tabs, and 1 folding view of the Battle of Marengo, drawn by Bagetti, captain engineer surveyor. Full tawny marbled calf, broad laurel-leaf border, Napoleon's coat of arms on boards, fillet on the edges, inner border. All edges gilt. (Very skilful, almost invisible restorations to the covers and one corner). A fine copy with the Emperor's coat of arms, with large margins, printed on fine wove paper. This is one of the first works published by the Imprimerie Impériale, and financed by the state to ensure Napoleon's fame, which soon became legendary. The original edition, dated 1804, was printed in a very limited number of copies, in broadsheet format, and reserved for the very highest dignitaries of the Empire. In 1806, this in-4° edition, printed in 300 copies at most, was published for important officials; and the current edition, in-8 format (1 copy of which is reproduced on Gallica), in around 1,500 copies. The copy has been enriched with a letter dated 25 floréal an 10 (15 mai 1802) signed by Berthier, on the letterhead of the Bureau du Mouvement des Troupes, Ministère de la Guerre. The white endpapers bear the bookplate of the Prince de Carini, and the bookplate of Charles de Lacharrière.
