Description

Jules Verne Autograph Letter Signed ALS in French, one page, 4 x 5, January 6, 1879. Handwritten letter to Marcus L. Mayer, director of the Princess's Theatre in London. In full (translated): "By writing to me or sending me telegrams instead of sending them to d'Ennery at Cap d'Antibe, you are wasting time which could be precious. I cannot answer you anything. It is d'Ennery who alone handles these matters and I thought you understood that. I sent him your last letter. I think he must have written to the copyist for the America manuscript; but I have no response yet, so please telegraph to him what you are proposing to us today, indicating where to respond to you; for me, I cannot make any decision. The safest and shortest thing is to contact him directly." In fine condition. Jules Verne and Adolphe d'Ennery collaborated on several occasions to adapt Voyages extraordinaires for the theatre. The Englishman Marcus L. Mayer was in charge of dealing with the sale of these pieces in Anglo-Saxon countries. This letter is mentioned in the Bulletin de la Société Jules Verne, no. 199 (pp. 23).
