Hans (Johannes) Lehmkuhl. 1883 - Bremen - 1969 Portrait of an African. 1941/42. oil on canvas, signed and dated JLehmkuhl 41 lower right, verso inscribed, signed and dated Neger schwarz JLehmkuhl 1942, 115 x 70 cm, rubbed, minimal retouching, framed 129.5 x 84.5 cm - In 1941 Lehmkuhl had received permission to paint portraits of prisoners of war of the French colonial army in the Luckenwalde prisoner of war camp. In 1942, Lehmkuhl's portraits from the POW camps were exhibited as part of a special exhibition at the Zeughaus Berlin.
