Upper left numbered: "No 31". Date: 1839 Description: The drawing was created on a journey that took the English architect, cartographer, archaeological writer, art collector, numismatist and literary translator William Barnard Clarke to France between 1838 and 1839 and later on to Italy in 1839. Here, the English architect has captured the structural features and decoration of the Roman triumphal arch from the 1st century in great detail. The relief on the narrow side of the arch shows trophies flanked by a pair of chained prisoners.
