Upper right dated: "Chalons Oct. 7th 1838". Date: 1838 Description: The view shows the Pont Saint Laurent over the Saône, the boats moored at the quays and the rows of houses on both sides of the river with precision and a special eye for architectural and technical detail. The sheet was created on a journey that took the English architect, cartographer, archaeological writer, art collector, numismatist and literary translator William Barnard Clarke to France between 1838 and 1839 and later on to Italy in 1839.
