Upper left numbered: "No 36". Date: c. 1830 Description: View of the staircase to the two characteristic towers of the gatehouse of the fortress in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, which was built on Mont Andaon in the first half of the 14th century. It houses a Romanesque chapel and the remains of the former Benedictine abbey of Saint-André. The sheet was created on a journey that took the English architect, cartographer, archaeological writer, art collector, numismatist and literary translator William Barnard Clarke to France between 1838 and 1839 and later to Italy in 1839.
