Description

† A COPPER-RED GLAZED ‘LANGYAO’ BOTTLE VASE, QING † A COPPER-RED GLAZED ‘LANGYAO’ BOTTLE VASE, QING China, 1644-1912. The tall neck rising from a globular body, supported on a short slightly tapered foot, covered with a finely crackled glaze of crushed strawberry tone, transmuting to hues of pale celadon and mushroom toward the top, the glaze neatly stopping above the unglazed foot rim revealing the white body beneath, the interior and the recessed base covered with a pale celadon glaze. Provenance: From a British collector. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, some firing irregularities, intentional glaze crackling, and light surface scratches. The foot ring with some chips and a central drilling for usage as a lamp base. Weight: 2,852 g Dimensions: Height 39.6 cm The term langyao, ‘lang wares’, derives its name from Lang Tingji, director of the official kilns at Jingdezhen between 1705-1712, who is credited with the revival of monochrome glazes and particularly copper-red glazes. The copper-red color is often considered the most challenging to regulate during the firing process as exactly the right conditions are required within the kiln to achieve the rich tones demonstrated by the present lot. Although copper-red was used successfully in the Ming dynasty, particularly in the Xuande period, the copper-red monochrome glazes seen in the Qing dynasty became even more refined and were of an exceptionally even and vibrant tone. 13% VAT will be added to the hammer price additional to the buyer's premium - only for buyers within the EU.
