AN ENAMELED BISCUIT PORCELAIN ‘MELON AND BEE’ WALL VASE, QING DYNASTY AN ENAMELED BISCUIT PORCELAIN ‘MELON AND BEE’ WALL VASE, QING DYNASTY China, 1644-1912. Finely molded, the lobed body borne on a gnarled leafy vine, enameled in bright green transitioning to yellow as it continues to ripen, a single bee rests on the melon’s body. The reverse with an opening for mounting and an incised leafy vine. Inscriptions: Sealed to the back with the character ‘Wan.’ Provenance: From the estate of Phillip Allen (1938-2022), who was a widely respected collector and expert of Chinese ceramics and works of art as well as a director of the Oriental Ceramic Society for many years. He co-authored and edited several exhibition catalogues for the OCS and was best known as the cataloguer of the Sir Victor Sassoon collection of Chinese ivories in the British Museum. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, firing flaws, small firing cracks, and traces of use. Weight: 233.5 g Dimensions: Length 17.3 cm The melon is a highly auspicious fruit in Chinese folk belief. It’s expansive and rapid growth as well as the many seeds within are symbolic for the wish for family growth through childbearing. The flowering vine as well as the bee express the wish for continued growth in the family.
